The city, first mentioned in 1404, is a regional center for administration, trade and transport (next to Meldorf, Sankt Peter-Ording and Büsum as tourist alternatives) shaped by its rural environment.

By plane
- The 1 Hamburg Airport
(IATA: HAM) is the closest commercial airport. (105 km).
- The 2 Heide-Büsum airfield(IATA: HEI) has a fired runway for aircraft up to 5.7 t gross vehicle weight. There is a flight connection from Heligoland with the OFD.
- The 3 St. Michaelisdonn airfield(ICAO: EDXM) is about 32 km from Heide.
By train
- in the 4 Heide station the regional express stops RE 6 (Hamburg-Altona - Westerland). The journey time from Hamburg-Altona to Heide is approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes.
- The regional train RB 62 connects heather with Itzehoe.
- The regional train RB 63 the NBE runs every hour between Büsum and Neumunster.

By boat
Heide is not directly on the water and is therefore not directly accessible by ship. Nevertheless, there are interesting connections for the journey:
- 7 Ferry terminal ELBFERRY-Brunsbüttel. After the ferry connection between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel, a modern, LNG-powered ferry has been crossing the Elbe every 3 hours since March 1st, 2021 6 Ferry dock in Cuxhaven. The ferry "GREENFERRY I" (ex "FANAFJORD") offers space for 212 cars or 150 cars and 28 trucks and up to 600 people on the approximately 60-minute crossing. The ship invites you to linger with a wonderful view over the river and the green marshland for a mini cruise on the busy Elbe. The ferry connection is also ideal as a connection between the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein and the north of Lower Saxony and Bremerhaven. - The Kiel Canal Route from Brunsbüttel to Kiel-Holtenau follows the most traveled artificial waterway in the world. The cycle path along the canal bank and through the canal hinterland gives the cyclist an impressive view of fat pots and snow-white dream ships.

- Easily reached by bike, a little west of the city, behind the hospital, is a Quarry pond.
- To the north, halfway to the village of Weddingstedt, are the Circular firs, a piece of forest.
- The 3 KOHLosseum
in Wesselburen, 18 km away, has its home in the historic building of the old sauerkraut factory. In the cabbage workshop you can experience how the Dithmarscher cabbage is processed into delicious sauerkraut. There is a lot to learn about the production, processing and background - from the head of cabbage to the ingredients. Ancient tools, pattern beds, old contemporary witnesses and picture stories can be viewed in the cabbage museum. In the shop, the farmers' market, you will find culinary delights for everything to do with cabbage and care products from our own production.
