Toenning (Danish: Tønning) is a city at the entrance to the peninsula Eiderstedt in North Frisia. The place at the Eider mouth is made up of the districts of Tönning, Olversum, Groß-Olversum and Kating. This is part of the urban area through the construction of the Eider Barrage resulting Katinger Watt nature reserve with the only larger forest area of the Schleswig-Holstein marshes.

Map of Tönning

The city was first mentioned in 1187 as Tunnighen Haeret (Harde von Tunnighen), but the year before the later St. Laurentius Church had been founded. Tönning acquired town charter together with Garding on October 12, 1590. Until 1864, the town belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig, which belonged to Denmark as a Danish fief and whose southern border was the Eider.

The current place name may have developed from “Tunnighen” (tun = Low German: fence). Tönning's city coat of arms, on the other hand, refers to a pretty legend according to which a swan was once driven on a barrel after a heavy storm surge and this was seen as a sign of God for the receding water.

For beach vacationers, Tönning offers an attractive green beach with beach chairs and some heaped sand on the Eider, which already has a "North Sea feeling" at high tide. A special feature are soft silt deposits on the beach area. The mud is said to have a healing effect on skin diseases and is also used in health applications. If you want to avoid the "black mass" while bathing, you can use two long wooden walkways as access to the Eider. When the weather is good, lifeguards are on duty at the beach on weekends and during the holidays.

What makes Tönning so attractive at the entrance to the Eiderstedt peninsula is the North Frisian small town flair with historic buildings and a good infrastructure, the historic port, which is often referred to as 'the most beautiful on the west coast', and the central location of the town with a large number of places that can also be reached by bike Cultural monuments and tourist attractions. Fashion-conscious people who like to go shopping won't find that much in Tönning (there is only one fashion and one shoe store), but Husum is only 25 km away and can also be reached by train in less than 20 minutes. A place to relax for a somewhat quieter holiday (also with children), for cyclists and for those interested in culture.

  • Historic port. The city has a fishing and sport boat harbor that was once of great economic importance, as ships traveled from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea via the Eider and the Schleswig-Holstein Canal, which was opened in 1784. The historic packing house at the port still bears witness to this time. With the completion of the Kiel Canal, the port increasingly lost its economic importance. In many travel guides the Tönninger Hafen is referred to as ‘the most beautiful harbor on the west coast’.
  • 1  Packhouse. The historic packing house at the harbor, built in 1783 and immortalized on a 45-cent stamp, now houses an exhibition by the Society for City History and is used for events as well as flea and Christmas markets. • Historic port. • St. Laurentius Church with the sandstone fountain from 1613.
  • Historic house gable, especially on the market square and in Neustraße. On Schleusenstrasse a house with a still functional freight elevator at the top of the gable.
  • 5 Old hospital in Neuweg 47. Erected in 1602, it is considered to be the oldest still existing building in the city. Once a poor house, it housed the Tönninger Heimatmuseum until the turn of the millennium and is now privately owned after its move to the packing house at the port.
  • 6 Old Tönning freight yard from the founding years of the Schleswig-Holstein railways. It is somewhat hidden, so that even many tourists who have been visiting Tönning for years do not know it. Around 8:30 a.m. - assuming the sky is open - great sunrise photos can be taken from the Eider promenade when the sun rises over Dithmarschen across the river and is reflected in the water.
  • 7 Katinger Watt Nature photographers will find a worthwhile area in the Katinger Watt, which belongs to Tönning (approx. 8km from the city center towards the mouth of the Eider) and then return to the edge of the nature reserve Grandpa Egg Grog one, its more than three centuries old, thatched roof is also a popular photo motif from outside and inside.
