Husum is the "metropolis" on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Theodor Storm's "gray city by the sea" is by no means gray. Through the port facility on the Wadden Sea, ebb and flow can be experienced in the middle of the city. At low tide, the water level in the basin of the inland port falls to the bottom, except for a small trickle of the draining Husumer Mühlenau. In the immediate vicinity of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, trips to the national park are a must. The combination of city life, nature and typical North Frisian tradition makes Husum a very special travel destination on the North Sea. The region is not only popular with locals, migratory birds and mudflat hikers.

When it was built in 1577-1582, the castle was in front of the city limits, hence the name. Husum Castle is located on an island surrounded by a moat that was once part of a simple fortification. The old and partly dilapidated Husum renaissance castle was renovated from 1750 to 1752 in a reduced form and adapted to the spirit of the time with baroque elements. In the 19th century, the district administration of the Husum district and the district court moved into the castle. Theodor Storm served here from 1873 to 1880 as a magistrate and judge. The castle survived the world wars of the 20th century without being destroyed. In 2003 the Friends of the castle in front of Husum founded, which is committed to the preservation of the listed building and a further expansion of the possible uses. The castle museum shows the formerly royal representation salons, the castle chapel and other rooms including equipment. The collections of the house are continuously updated. The castle is involved in a large number of public events. In addition to the museum, concerts, theater performances and changing special exhibitions take place here on a regular basis, which have been located under the restored roof structure since 2008. The castle is surrounded by a five-hectare park, which is one of the most famous sights on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.
