The green island Pellworm (North Frisian: Polweerm or Pälweerm, Danish: Pelvorm) is one of the less well-known islands of the North Frisian "archipelago". Those looking for peace and quiet away from mass tourism have come to the right place on the island, which consists of diked marsh meadows.

Pellworm is the North Frisian center in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Without a dike, Pellworm would have a problem, because the marsh island is about 1 meter below sea level. An 8 m high and 25 km long dike therefore protects the island.
Pellworm exists as well North beach and the Hamburger Halligwhich, however, are connected to the mainland by dams, from parts of the historical island "Strand", which was caused by a storm surge in 1634 (known as Burchardi flood or as that Second Grote Mandränke has been handed down) was destroyed. The reasons were the poor state of preservation of the dykes after numerous storms, ice and even summer floods in previous years, and the peat extraction at the time, which had caused the land to drop below sea level. The North Sea had an easy time of it.
Pellworm has always been overshadowed by its prominent neighbors Sylt, Foehr and Amrum. As a holidaymaker, you shouldn't expect any tourist activity on Pellworm, even if there are numerous offers for guests. What you can expect is peace and quiet, especially in the off-season, and an infinite number of sheep that actively protect dikes around the island. The number of visitors is manageable even in the high season. Connoisseurs appreciate the island as a place to recharge your batteries, where you can find peace and quiet. Many guests who have been to Pellworm once come back again and again.
The wind turbines, photovoltaic and biogas systems, which you inevitably come across again and again, are not very idyllic, but all the more sensible. When the wind blows and the sun shines, Pellworm can generate three times as much electricity as is needed on the island.

The 2 Husum train station
is the next train station, from there you take the bus to the pier in Strucklahnungshörn. One-way tickets for rail and bus connections from Husum to the ferry and for the ferry are available in all DB travel centers and DB agencies.
By bus
- Long-distance bus lines have not yet discovered this corner of Germany. Suitable connections exist up to Hamburg central bus station and then continue by train to Husum.
- A public bus runs between Husum and Pellworm train station, and there is a suitable bus connection on line 140 for almost every ferry arrival and departure.

The scheduled ferry MS "PELLWORM I" departs from 4 Pier Strucklahnungshörn / Nordstrand In (almost) any weather and at any time of the year it takes around 35 minutes to get to the Pellworm deep-water jetty. From here it is about 2 km to the island's capital "Tektiven". A free shuttle bus is available from the Pellworm ferry terminal to the spa center and the Pellworm harbor. There is a bus connection from Husum to Strucklahnungshörn (not for all ferry departures / arrivals). Cars must / should be registered if you want to have a transport guarantee for a certain crossing, bicycles are generally transported. A flat-rate surcharge is levied for cars with rear bike racks, regardless of the number of bikes carried on them.
By bicycle
The North Sea Cycle Route leads directly past the pier in Strucklahnungshörn on Nordstrand, so that Pellworm is an ideal detour for cyclists on this route.
mobility
When you arrive on Pellworm, you first have to overcome the two kilometers from the deep-water jetty to the island itself. For pedestrians, a free shuttle bus commutes from the Pellworm ferry terminal to the spa center and the Pellworm harbor, for cyclists there is a cycle lane on the edge of the dam.
The regular buses on Pellworm are tied to school transport and therefore only run at regular intervals during school hours. If you need passenger transport outside of these times, you can call the island transport service (shared taxi) for up to 8 people on Tel. 49 (0)4844 1515.
On the phone no. 49 (0)4844-222 can be in the period from mid-March to early November (exact times see bus timetable) an on-call bus can be requested. It must be requested no later than 45 minutes before the ferry departs.
Of course, you can also go hiking or Nordic walking in the healthy air.
In addition to your own car, the bicycle is probably the most popular means of transport on the island. The distance to go around Pellworm on the dike is around 28 km and can therefore be done in one day for most cyclists without major problems. The small roads across the island are also easy to cycle, but there are no bike paths. If you don't have your own bike with you, you can borrow one from:

The tower of the old church in Alten Koog on the west coast is next to the lighthouse another landmark of Pellworm and at the same time a landmark. The ruins of the old church tower, which partially collapsed in 1611, rise up next to the church building as the home of numerous species of birds, mostly swarmed by numerous birds taking off and landing. The church has a precious Arp Schnitger organ from 1710/11. Organ concerts are held here every week in summer.

The Momme-Nissen-Haus is for the few Catholic families on the island, but especially for the holiday guests, the St. Petrus Chapel. The house is named after the Dominican priest Benedikt Momme Nissen (1870 to 1943) from Deezbüll, North Frisia, a painter who converted to Catholicism in 1902. Worth seeing in the interior of the chapel are the stained glass with motifs from the churches that went under during the great flood in 1634, as well as the altarpiece. If a Catholic pastor is on Pellworm, the services take place on Sundays at 10:00 a.m.Open: every day.

Guests shouldn't miss the island museum! There are many exciting things to discover about the North Sea island's past.
- 5 Rungholt Museum Bahnsen, Westerschütting 2, 25849 Pellworm. Tel.: 49 (0)4844 569. The mudflat guide and local researcher Helmut Bahnsen has built a small private museum from his numerous finds from the submerged settlements around Pellworm. The museum was named after the place Rungholt on the former island of Strand, which went down in the great storm surge of 1634 and of which only Pellworm and the Nordstrand peninsula still exist today. A visit to this exciting museum is an absolute must for every visitor to Pellworm!
- 6 Steamer shed (at the harbor, north bank). The steam shed is a small maritime museum built and maintained by volunteers at the old port. The theme of the permanent exhibition is "Seafaring is necessary". An exhibition on seafaring is shown, with some regional relevance. An important point is also the sea rescue. Shown include Photos, maps, models of the steamers and ferries of the local shipping companies, wreckage, historical navigation devices, even a navigating bridge, a map room and the cable section of a ship. The steam shed has developed into an important maritime museum in recent years, which is known beyond the borders of Pellworm. - 7 lighthouse, Süderkoogweg 9, 25849 Pellworm. The island's landmark is the tallest structure at 41.5 m. The 130-ton cast steel tower can be climbed on certain dates. The viewing platform can be reached after 140 steps at a height of 37 m. Registration and entrance garden only in the tourist information. For safety reasons, children under 8 years of age are not allowed to climb the tower. - The Nordermühle (Galerieholländer) has stood on the sea dike since 1652, it is the only completely preserved mill on the island. The cap is locked in place, but the device is no longer in place. After the restoration, the mill was used as a restaurant from 1995 to 2008, after the renovation in 2009 it is divided into three holiday apartments and cannot be visited.

Wind turbines and a large solar power system combine to produce renewable electricity for the island. Both types of power plant complement each other perfectly. There are information boards at the power plant. In addition, in spring 2013 as a research project "SmartRegion Pellworm" two larger accumulators installed to store electricity. The hybrid power plant with its information center is a popular tourist destination and is open to guests in summer.

- 3 Bird bunk. The bird bunk was a facility for catching wild ducks and geese. The old interception systems can still be visited. Today you can go for a wonderful walk in the small forest around the lake and enjoy the nature and the tranquility. A meadow orchard was created in front of the Vogelkoje area. The bird bunk is until 15.08. Sea eagle sanctuary and therefore closed!Open: from 16.08.

Swimming
Bathing areas ("Green beaches") are distributed around the island coast. However, you can only swim at high tide. On every beach there are stairs to the water / mudflats, beach showers and a toilet behind the dike. There is a kiosk for drinks, ice cream and tasty snacks near the "Hooger Fähre" and "Leuchtturm" bathing spots.

Cycling
Since the car traffic on the island is limited, relaxed bike tours are possible. In addition, all cycle routes on the island are paved. A cycling map is available free of charge from the Pellworm spa and tourism service. A lap around the island on the outer dike measures 28 km, a lap through the interior of the island is 14 km to 21 km, depending on the route chosen. Now and then only the ubiquitous sheep can be perceived as annoying.

Mudflat walks
Of course, the island in the mudflats invites you to take it easy Mudflat walks. There are different topics and times (from 1.5 hours) to choose from. A highlight is the hike to the Hallig Süderoog:
The protected Hallig, about 6 km away, is accessible as part of a guided mudflat hike. Incidentally, 3 people live there permanently. You should definitely take a guided tour through the Wadden Sea protection station or with the postman Knud Knudsen to get there. You have about 1 hour on the Hallig. Total duration of the hike about 4.5 hours. Registration is required in the main season due to the limited number of people! Participant lists are posted in the Wadden Sea Protection Station.
Walking and hiking
When hiking or walking in the fresh sea air, you can particularly enjoy the originality of the green island. Flat terrain, well-developed paths and roads and not too much car traffic are ideal conditions for this. horse riding
Is on the island horse riding a very popular way of getting around. Something very special is of course mudflat riding in a group with a well-trained group leader. You can get your horse at the Appelhof, or you can bring your own horse to the island. Here you can also do pony rides and your pony driving license. If you don't necessarily want to be active yourself, you can explore the island with a horse-drawn carriage. There are also several carriages available in the Appelhof, and you can agree on the route and time. But you should definitely register in advance and make an appointment.

Pellworm offers an Edeka market in the center and a Markant market on Nordermitteldeich. There is also a baker. In the main season, the Markant market is also open for one hour on Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m. and the Edeka market is also open for one hour on Sunday mornings.

- Passenger ferry to Hooge, Amrum and Sylt: The passenger ship that runs daily from Strucklahnungshörn during the season (until the end of October) MS Adler Express lays on the north beach route on Thursdays - Hallig Hooge - Amrum - Sylt and back in both directions also in 6 Pellworm harbor on (2019: 9:30 a.m. there, 7:25 p.m. back). From Sylt there is the possibility of continuing to the high seas island Heligoland.
