background

Föhr is among the German islands without road or rail connections to the mainland, the largest island in terms of area with the highest population. It is the fifth largest German island and the second largest German North Sea island. Föhr is also called "the green island" because it is in the slipstream of Amrum and Sylt is relatively protected from the stormy influences of the North Sea. Föhr is a popular holiday destination and is mainly dependent on tourism, as are the neighboring islands. A 15-kilometer-long sandy beach stretches from the Wyk ferry port on the southern edge. Protection zone I of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park lies north and northwest of the island. The main town Wyk is a state-recognized North Sea spa.

In addition to High German, Fering, the Föhr dialect of North Frisian, is spoken on Föhr. Föhr Frisian is still widespread in everyday life, especially in the island's Westerland. In addition, Low German (Low German) and Danish are sometimes spoken on Föhr.

Frisian is now being taught again in schools on the island, and there is also a small Danish island school.

getting there

The island of Föhr can only be reached by air or water. The journey by train or car happens via the place 13 DagebüllWebsite of this institutionDagebüll in the encyclopedia WikipediaDagebüll in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsDagebüll (Q20744) in the Wikidata database. From there the W.D.R.

The ferry North Frisia is a classic ferry on the Dagebüll - Föhr - Amrum line. The ship has a capacity of 1190 passengers and up to 53 cars. The 67.8 m long and 15 m wide ferry can reach up to 12.5 knots (= 23 km / h). Sister ships that are also regularly on the island line: the modern one MS Uthlande from 2010, the MS Rungholt as well as the MS Schleswig-Holstein. All ships have at least one ship catering facility.

By train

The mainland station for the island of Föhr is called 1 Dagebüll Mole. This station is served by the private one North German Railway Company (NEG) via an approx. 14 km long branch line Niebüll. The train arrival and departure times are very good on the ferry departures of the W.D.R ferry coordinated, whose ferries take 45 minutes for the crossing. It is only a few meters from the train platform to the ferry terminal, which makes traveling by train quite comfortable.

Every day up to 4 intercity trains from all over Germany have through coaches, which are moved in Niebüll, so that no suitcases have to be dragged here. These through coaches are very busy, especially on the weekends when there is a change of guests on the islands of Föhr and Amrum, and an early reservation is therefore recommended. If you can no longer get a seat ticket, you can of course also use the underpass in Niebüll and thus overcome the short distance between the platforms on foot. Tickets can be purchased from all German train stations, including the NEG and the ferry to Wyk auf Föhr.

The NEG does not wait for Deutsche Bahn intercity trains that are severely delayed. In such cases, the through cars are then transported to the next scheduled train to Dagebüll Mole. A delayed arrival on Föhr of up to 2 hours should be taken into account in the planning and clarified with the host on Föhr in advance how they can be reached in such cases.

When you arrive on Föhr, you can either take the island bus or a taxi to continue your journey to the quarter. Taxis can quickly become scarce after the ferry arrives, so a reservation should be considered. The island bus is operated by W.D.R, whose website also includes the Timetables can be downloaded.

activities

  • Swimming - In the Wyk area there is a 4 km long, very well-kept sandy beach with a good infrastructure. Other sandy beaches can be found at Nieblum and Utersum. The beaches slope very gently into the water, so that children can swim well. However, at low tide the water drops sharply (several hundred meters) on many stretches of the beach and bathing is then not possible from the beach. It is best to bathe when the tide comes in (from approx. 3 hours before high tide) and in the first two hours after high tide. If you run out to bathe in the mudflats at low tide, you should remember that when the water returns, the troughs can quickly fill up and then have a strong and dangerous current. Information on the current water temperatures on Föhr can be found on the website of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency to find. Fans of nudist bathing will be disappointed at the only stretch of beach (29) on Wyker Südstrand that is designated for it. The beach section is by far the least attractive.
  • To go biking - The relatively large island offers nice opportunities for cycling. There are some quiet back roads and traffic-free agricultural paths. Bicycles can be found at many on the island Rental stations borrow. Especially those in the island villages are usually characterized by a pick-up and delivery service and slightly lower prices. E-bikes are also on offer. However, due to the extremely small height differences, the inexpensive 3-speed bikes are usually sufficient. If the headwind is too strong for you, you can simply shorten the route. There is a bike map available for a fee, but the variant that is available free of charge in many places also works. That too Downloading GPS data is possible. If you don't want to just set off, you can choose one of the five marked circular routes, which are described in detail on the Internet:
  1. Big island tour (approx. 40 km). This tour can also be varied by cycling the north side of the island along the dike from Wyk harbor to Utersum. You can experience the lonely and quiet landscape in an excellent way. In Utersum you will meet the signposted route again.
  2. Föhr contemporary witnesses (approx. 21 km)
  3. Klaar-Kimming (approx. 15 km)
  4. Art Trail (approx. 21 km)
  5. March route (approx. 28 km)
  • water sports - Due to its sheltered location behind the island of Amrum, there is usually hardly any surf on Föhr and the wind strength is also low. Nevertheless, water sports centers offer a comprehensive selection of water sports activities on various beach sections (e.g. Wyk Südstrand). Surf and sailing courses as well as training in kite surfing are offered there. Sea kayaks and SUPs (stand-up paddles) can be borrowed. Beach surfing is also offered during the approx. 2-hour dry-fall period. Sailing and surfing are very tide-dependent.
  • Mudflat hiking - Föhr with its extensive tidal flats at low tide offers excellent conditions for long hikes through the tidal flats. The W.D.R regularly offers a guided mudflat hike between Föhr and Amrum at. After a bus transfer to the dike parking lot in Dunsum, it is about 8 km through the tidal flats (you have to cross a waist-high tidal creek, which is why appropriate clothing is advisable). On Amrum there is a bus transfer to the ferry terminal. Then take the ferry back to Föhr. Occasionally, guided mudflat walks to the mainland are also offered. More detailed information can be found in the official event calendar. From the south beach you can enter the mudflats at almost any point on the beach. However, important rules should be observed:
  1. Start of the hike approx. 2 hours before low tide
  2. Run back in time and watch out for (fast) full tides
  3. Don't forget sun protection
  4. Never stop in the mudflats in fog. You will inevitably run in circles and thereby put your life at risk
