Schleswig (Low German: Sleswig, Danish: Slesvig) is a city in Schleswig-Holstein, located on the Schlei.

background

For a long time Schleswig played an important role as a trading town, bishopric and political center of the Duchy of Schleswig and South Jutland. She also gave the duchy its name. After the German-Danish wars, Schleswig was temporarily the capital of the new German / Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein. The city still plays a supraregional role as a court and cultural location. In 2008 the first state horticultural show took place in Schleswig.

The forerunner of the city of Schleswig was the Viking settlement Haithabu (Danish: Hedeby). Haithabu was strategically located on the Jutland isthmus between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The historic Viking trading post Haithabu and Danewerk will receive the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO in June 2018 after a long preparation.
