The history of the town of Sønderborg is closely linked to that of the castle of the same name. This emerged from a fortress built in the 12th century to ward off pirate attacks by the Wenden. Danish kings resided here for a time, and then from the 16th century the dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg.

The nearby ones had significant historical significance Düppeler Schanzen, a Danish defense system, both during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1st Schleswig War) in 1849 and during the German-Danish War in 1864, when the decisive battle ended here with a victory for Prussia.
