Kappeln (Danish Chapel) is a city in Schleswig-Holstein. It was first mentioned in a document in 1357 and has had town charter since 1870.

Kappeln lies on both sides of the Schlei, a narrow bay of the Baltic Sea, on the peninsulas fishing and Swans. The urban area also includes the transition from the Schlei to the Baltic Sea. The district of Olpenitz is located south of the mouth of the Schlei. A base of the German Navy was located here from 1694 to 2006. On the north side of the mucous mouth lies the Pilot island. Due to the age of the city of Kappeln, there are many buildings worth seeing in the city area, many beautiful private and commercial buildings. But also modern buildings such as B. the new bascule bridge can be found everywhere.

- The 11 Historic sawmill has been managed by the Kappelner Werkstätten since August 1996 as a “working museum” after it was restored in 1995/96. Saws are still used today, some of them from 1895 and a 4-side planer from 1900.
- It can be seen very well from the Schleibrücke 1 Herring fence, the only still functioning such fish-catching system in all of Europe. It dates from the 15th century. Every year in spring, herrings swim from the Baltic Sea to their spawning grounds in the Schlei. In doing so, many end up in the trap-like braided fence, at the end of which there is a safety net. Defective areas are repaired annually, but the principle has remained unchanged. Every year on Ascension Day, the herring fence and its "residents" are targeted by locals and guests. Then the traditional folk festival that Kappelner Herring Days celebrated.
- Today's 12 Bascule bridge was opened in 2002. But there was already a Schlei crossing at this point since 1671, first as a ferry, then from 1867 to 1927 as a pontoon bridge, and finally it replaced a combined car and railway swing bridge. The bridge keeper's house is on the eastern flap pillar. From here the bridge is always opened 15 minutes before the hour.
