Map of Kappeln

Kappeln lies on both sides of the Schlei, a narrow bay of the Baltic Sea, on the peninsulas fishing and Swans. The urban area also includes the transition from the Schlei to the Baltic Sea. The district of Olpenitz is located south of the mouth of the Schlei. A base of the German Navy was located here from 1694 to 2006. On the north side of the mucous mouth lies the Pilot island. This "island" is actually a peninsula, the tip of which with the lighthouse, the pilot house and the "poison booth" can only be reached by ship. Kappeln is strongly maritime influenced by the Schlei and the nearby Baltic Sea. From many places in the city you have a beautiful view of the water, not least from the districts Schleimünde and Olpenitz. Even if seafaring on ocean-going ships does not necessarily play a major role in Kappeln, it is not without significance that one of the leading ones in Germany Intermediary of Freighter voyages has its seat here in the immediate vicinity of the harbor.
