In addition to the city of Glücksburg, the municipality also includes the districts of Holnis (Danish: Holnæs), Schausende (Skovsende), Bockholm (Bogholm), Ulstrupfeld (Ulstrupmark), Sandwig (Sandvig), Rüdeheck (Rydeled), Meierwik (Mejervig) and Bremsberg (Bremsbjerg). The city of Glücksburg is the northernmost city in Germany, about 20 kilometers from the Danish border.
Glücksburg has a marina, which is the venue for international sailing championships and regattas of historic yachts and at the same time the location of the largest and oldest sailing school in Germany; the Hanseatic yacht school.
History
The Glücksburg area is a very old settlement area. This is indicated by numerous Neolithic and Bronze Age tombs. The actual settlement of the Glücksburg area began in 1210 with the inauguration of the newly built Rudekloster. This possessed extensive land holdings and also had great political importance. The monastery was demolished in 1582, and Johann the Younger had the Glücksburg moated castle built in almost the same place. The location completely depends on the castle. After the death of John the Younger, the already small duchy was divided among his many sons (he had 23 children from two marriages). The Glücksburg ducal line died out after the death of the last Duke Friedrich Hinrich Wilhelm, after which the area was confiscated by the Danish king and assigned to the Flensburg office as Munkbrarupharde. In 1842, Glücksburg was granted the justice of the spots with the privilege of holding a market twice a year. Until 1863, the castle was the summer residence of the Danish King Friedrich VII. The royal oak on the castle lake was one of his favorite places.
The rise of Glücksburg as a tourist resort began from around 1872, the first small spa house was opened in Sandwig, and around 2 years later the famous beach hotel opposite the steamboat pier took its place. The establishment of bathing establishments follows. The number of bathers rose from 400 to over 2000 at the turn of the century. Glücksburg flourishes. The small railway between Glücksburg and Flensburg, inaugurated in 1885, was discontinued in 1953. Glücksburg, with around 1400 inhabitants, was granted town charter in 1900. The First World War affected tourism. Glücksburg is temporarily a garrison.
In the 1933 elections, the National Socialists came to power with over 60%. The Second World War demands great sacrifices from Glücksburg, 241 people die. The urban area itself is not affected. After the end of the war, almost 200 former high-ranking soldiers were housed as prisoners in the castle. The castle is being repaired and Pentecost 1948 is opened with 100 participants, and the orangery in its classicistic beauty is also being restored. From 1961, the establishment of the Bundeswehr again led to military use of the Meierwik barracks area. Glücksburg is once again becoming a garrison town. In 1961, Meierwik became the seat of the fleet command, and in 1985 the bunkered headquarters of the fleet was built. From 1963, a rapid development in tourism began in Glücksburg, also benefiting from tax-saving models.
tourism
Due to the delightful scenic location and the infrastructural facilities, Glücksburg was particularly interested in further development in the field of tourism. In 1872 Glücksburg became a seaside resort and tourism is still there today economically of great importance. Due to the strong competition on the Baltic Sea, a clear positioning is necessary. Glücksburg focuses primarily on health tourism, especially wellness tourism. The adventure pool Funding country thermal baths, the beach promenades with a view of the Danish coast, a newly created Nordic walking park and much more support this positioning.Due to its proximity to the border, Glücksburg is an ideal starting point for day trips to Denmark, where Glücksburg has a partnership with the city of Ærøskøbing.

The castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. The moated castle Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord was built in 1582-1587 by order of Duke Johann (Hans) the Younger (1545-1622). It served the ducal lines of the Glücksburg family as their ancestral seat and was the temporary residence of the Danish royal family. The family members of the Glücksburg house named after the castle are related to almost all European dynasties. The castle is one of the most famous sights of Schleswig-Holstein. The castle remained the main residence of the ducal family until the 20th century, who only gradually moved to the mansions of the surrounding estates. In 1922 the family transferred the castle to a foundation, the purpose of which was not only to preserve Glücksburg, but also to allow the public to participate in the cultural monument. The board of the foundation is provided by the ducal family itself. The Glücksburg buildings survived the world wars without major damage. Only the castle bells were confiscated and melted down during the First World War. The reopening of the palace and museum took place at Pentecost 1948. It now houses a museum and is open to visitors.
