Rømø is one of the Danish Wadden Islands. It is not far from the German island Sylt. The popular holiday island with its long sandy beach is also suitable for families with children.

background

From a geological point of view, the island is an alluvial layer of sand created by the sand movements of the North Sea. The largest elevation in Rømø is a sand dune around 20 m high. Larger stones are rare.

In terms of tourism, Rømø is a paradise for kite surfers, buggy kiters and fans of stunt kites - the seemingly infinitely long sandy beach on the west side offers enough space for all these extensive sports, and you can also drive your car with the equipment right out onto the beach.

In addition to this distinctive sandy attraction on Rømø, there is little worth seeing, tourists in the numerous holiday homes or on the three campsites enjoy the beach life and the tranquility of the island, which are a relaxed contrast to the hustle and bustle of the southern neighboring island Sylt offers.

getting there

Rømødæmningen - the Rømødamm from the mainland, with the island in the background

By boat

1 Sylt ferry terminal: You can take the car and passenger ferry SyltExpress on the Rømø-Sylt-Linie from Havneby to Cunning translate in the north of the island of Sylt

By car

The island is connected to the mainland by a 9.2 km long causeway. A two-lane paved road leads over the dam. There are two petrol stations at the transition from the dam to the island.

By bicycle

In both directions of travel of the Rømødamm there is a cycle path next to the roadway, which is not secured by guard rails from the lanes. You should also keep in mind that you are exposed to wind and possibly sun unprotected on the entire route, with a headwind the 9 km can be very exhausting.

mobility

On the island there are some roads on the eastern edge, the western edge with the beaches is connected by spur roads. Both in the north and in the south of the island there are firing ranges for the Danish army. The usage plans are posted at the driveways. If the signal balls are raised, the area may not be entered. Usually the driveways are then guarded. Some of the extremely wide sandy beaches can be accessed by car. However, it is recommended not to deviate from the heavily trafficked paths so as not to get stuck. On days when the beach is heavily frequented by motorists, the local youth earn one or two euros by dragging tourists.

The unauthorized areas are cordoned off with rows of wooden stakes.

activities

There is a designated beach section for surfers and kite surfers, which is located north of the Lakolk beach entrance. The former surf spot on the middle section of the beach (between Lakolk and Süderstrand) has given way to a nature reserve. You can drive almost to the water and park there, taking into account the running water. The island was also created by drifting sand and damage from sand in the car and the paintwork is to be expected.

  • Kite buggy

The southwest beach is reserved for buggy drivers. The 2.5 km wide sandy beaches are smoothed by the interplay of water and wind and are quite firm due to the wetness of the sand. Until April 1st, when the bird sanctuary begins, the army uses the firing range quite often, so that you are only allowed on the beach after 6:00 p.m.

In the high season there are sanitary facilities on the beach of Lakolk (2 DKK or 50 ct.) And on the south beach west of Havneby.
