Kiel Canal - Nord-Ostsee-Kanal

The high bridge at Rendsburg is probably the most famous bridge over the Kiel Canal. The trains cross the canal here at a height of 42 m

The 98.26 km long Kiel Canal, also known as Kiel Canal (called Kaiser Wilhelm Canal in Germany until 1948), connects the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe with the Baltic Sea in the Bay of Kiel. It is the most frequented artificial waterway for seagoing ships worldwide (30,269 ships passed it in 2017) and saves ships from having to travel around 250 nautical miles around Jutland, through Skagerrak and Kattegat.

The Kiel Canal runs through Holstein, it partially forms the border with southern Schleswig. In terms of its importance, the Kiel Canal is not only an important part of the regional economy, but also an essential component of the European transport network. Due to its travel and time advantages, it represents a great economic advantage for international shipping. Driving on the canal brings considerable travel advantages, depending on the port of departure and destination, an average of 250 nautical miles (463 km). Depending on the speed of the ship, a skilful route selection can avoid a high loss of time and save fuel. The CO2 emissions are therefore also considerably lower.

The Kiel Canal is also an attraction for thousands of tourists every year. Side by side with container ships, sport boats and luxury liners, well-developed service routes along the canal offer an ideal area for hikers, joggers and cyclists.

  • Almost the entire length of the Kiel Canal is accompanied by hiking trails and cycle paths. It crosses different landscapes and reaches interesting cities. It is therefore suitable as a panorama trail. Incidentally, the cycle paths are largely Two-lane roads made of concrete and therefore rather unsuitable for multi-lane bicycle trailers. Detours to the surrounding towns enable interesting stages with many overnight accommodations. For route descriptions and further information, see Cycling compass, Wheel pilot. Tip: Those who just want to cross the canal and don't necessarily want to enjoy the view from one of the few bridges that are over 40 m high for pedestrians and cyclists should use the ferries.
  • The canal is spanned by 10 bridges, all of which have a clearance height of 42 m, but only a few are permitted for pedestrians or cyclists. The bridges in Hochdonn and Rendsburg are pure railway bridges. The bridges in Brunsbüttel B5, Hohenhörn A23, Rade A7 and Levensau B76 are reserved exclusively for motor vehicle traffic. In addition to walking or cycling, only the Grünentaler high bridgeL 316, the old Levensauer high bridge K 24 and the two bridges (Prince Heinrich Bridge and Olympic Bridge) in Kiel during the B503 be used.
  • On 14 Ferry stations the canal can be crossed. All ferries on the canal are free, including the transporter ferry in Rendsburg, which is well worth seeing. The ferries run 7 days a week, 24 hours around the clock and commute from bank to bank as required. They enable pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles weighing up to 38 t to safely pass through the canal. Only the ferry between Kiel-Wik and Kiel-Holtenau is the only one that does not carry motor vehicles, and its operation is limited in time (Mon-Fri 06: 30-22: 00; Sat-Sun holidays 09: 30-22: 00).
  • In Rendsburg there are 2 tunnels. The Pedestrian tunnel With its 4 escalators, each 55.9 m, which was the longest in Europe, it enables pedestrians and cyclists (access via elevator) to cross under the Kiel Canal around the clock. The tunnel is monitored by video. As a tourist you shouldn't miss a walk through the tunnel. The 1 Canal tunnelKanaltunnel in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaKanaltunnel im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsKanaltunnel (Q1723612) in der Datenbank Wikidata in the course of B77/B202 is a pure tunnel for motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists are not allowed to use it. It connects the northern districts of Rendsburg with Westerrönfeld.
  • In 12 Switches Even the largest ships can meet in the canal (passing points).
  • Various shops along the canal Campsites and RV parks to observe the lively shipping traffic. In addition to the "official" seats, there are some free seats on almost every ferry.
  • The maximum speed for ships in the canal is 15 km / h (8.1 kn) - for ships of traffic group 6 or a draft of more than 8.5 m: 12 km / h (6.5 kn)
  • For seagoing vessels, the greatest length is 235 m, the greatest width 32.5 m.
  • The Kiel Canal is particularly easy to experience from the navigating bridge of a cargo ship as a passenger Freighter voyage.
  • The canal is also very often used by cruise ships. The sight of the dream ships up close is quite impressive. So that you don't miss a ship: This offers a year-round schedule and up-to-date telephone information Waterways and Shipping Office. The schedule is also available as a Download PDF take away.
  • Around 14,000 pleasure craft use the Kiel Canal every year.
  • Sports vehicles are only allowed to use the canal during the daytime. Due to the heavy shipping traffic, special ones apply Precautions. There are berths for pleasure craft in Brunsbuettel, in a few places in the canal and in the Kiel-Holtenau marina right in front of the lock.
  • The Kiel Canal may not be sailed on; Exception: the area around the lock port Kiel-Holtenau. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration publishes traffic regulations and other regulations for the use of the waterway as Leaflet.
