The Grünentaler high bridge is a road and rail bridge over the Kiel Canal at the canal km 31.0. The bridge is one of the few ways to cross the canal by bike or on foot.

Even if the beautiful old high bridge was demolished in 1988 when the canal was widened, the new high bridge is definitely worth a visit, even if you don't have to cross the canal.

By the way, Grünental itself is a small settlement east of the canal with excursion restaurants.

Pictures of the historic canal bridge from 1892 are in the corresponding w: Grünentaler Hochbrücke to find. This arch bridge was replaced by a new steel truss bridge between 1984 and 1986. This became necessary because the stability of the old bridge was no longer guaranteed. The old bridge also represented a bottleneck in the canal. This was only 87 m instead of 160 m wide. This bottleneck could be eliminated with the new bridge.
As a passenger you can enjoy a special view of the bridge Freighter voyage.

The bridge can be crossed on foot. There is a cycle and footpath that leads over the structure. There's one on the west side 5 descent down to the canal.

There are parking spaces at both bridge embankments.

Old high bridge

Due to the widening of the canal, the old high bridge no longer exists since 1988. The bridge embankments are still there:

  • 1 Western bridgehead - There is a memorial to the old bridge on it. An information board shows a picture of the old high bridge and provides information about the local history. The place is also well suited for observing ships on the canal.
  • 2 eastern bridgehead - Rest area with refuge
  • 3 Bridge model in Brunsbüttel - A beautiful model of the old high bridge is in the atrium of the locks Brunsbuettel issued.

New high bridge

The current bridge was completed in 1988 after the canal was widened. In addition to the country road and railway line, there is also a cycle path over the bridge. From the building you have a beautiful view of the canal and the surrounding area.

There are little things in the canal kiosk on the eastern side of the bridge. The kiosk was founded in 2006 by the then unemployed Olaf Francke and is now known regionally.
