The peninsula between Eckernförde Bay in the north and the Kiel Fjord in the south is part of the historical part of southern Schleswig. Some places north of the Kiel Canal are now incorporated into the otherwise Holstein city of Kiel.

The journey usually takes place via the nearby Kiel.
Gettorf is located on the railway line between Kiel and Flensburg, which is served every hour by the Kiel – Flensburg regional express and the Kiel – Eckernförde regional train. The journey time from Kiel is 15-20 minutes, from Eckernförde 7 minutes, from Flensburg just under an hour.
From Kiel federal road 76 leads through Gettorf and on to Eckernförde, Schleswig and Flensburg.
