Maria Magdalenen Church
Dithmarscher Brewery in Marne (Holstein)
  • 1  Maria Magdalenen Church, Österstraße 16, 25709 Marne (church office). Tel.: 49 (0)4851 574, Fax: 49 (0)4851 85372. The Protestant Maria Magdalenen Church was built between 1904 and 1906 in place of a previous building that had often been changed. It stands on Marne's highest point, the Kirchwurt, next to the town hall. The brick building based on the early Gothic model with its 61.5 m high tower towers over the city and can be seen from afar. In the interior of the church, the altar forms the center. The pulpit from the old church is a work of art of particular quality and beauty. It dates from 1603. The baptismal font is the oldest part of the church, it dates from the 13th century. The organ was built in 1906 as a Renaissance double work and is lavishly carved. The windows with their ornamental glazing from the period of construction give the church a warm, bright atmosphere.
  • The 2 Müllenhoff fountain (Fairytale fountain) commemorates the sculptor Karl Viktor Müllenhoff, who was born in Marne on September 8, 1818. The fountain refers to the old legend of the miracle tree. The "miracle tree" shown tells that the Dithmarschers regain their freedom when a withered linden tree with crossed branches turns green again and a black magpie with five white cubs nests in this tree. Dithmarscher women and men dance around the tree in national costume, gender coats of arms hang at their feet. The magpie then got a rabbit mask and thus the connection to the carnival was established. At the moment, however, he presents himself "naked": The 20 gender coats of arms have been repeatedly damaged or even stolen. So the city removed the few that remained.
  • The 1 Dithmarscher brewery has been at the site since 1775. The brewery itself was founded in 1884 by Christian Hintz and is still family-owned today. The brewery cultivates an image associated with the landscape and tradition of the region.
