Dithmarschen is a circle on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and includes the southern stretch of coast between the rivers Eider and Elbe. The transition to the rest of Holstein is made today by the Kiel Canal pictured. Dithmarschen mainly belongs to the large landscape Continental North Sea coast.

Dithmarschen was a free peasant republic from the late Middle Ages until 1559. After 1559 it became the Duchy of Holstein. Norderdithmarschen was ruled by the Gottorf dukes (ducal share), while Süderdithmarschen was ruled by the Danish king in the capacity of Duke of Holstein (royal share). Today Dithmarschen is a district in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The landscape consists largely of marshland (köge).
In contrast to most of the Dutch and German North Sea coasts, Dithmarschen was never influenced by Frisian, but was inhabited by Saxony.

Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park
- The beautiful landscape of the Wadden Sea National Park has a variety of animal and plant species. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park stretches from the German-Danish border to the mouth of the Elbe. With an area of 4410km², it is the largest national park in Germany
Kiel Canal
- The Kiel Canal is the busiest shipping route in the world. It connects Brunsbüttel and Kiel-Holtenau over a total length of approx. 100 km. For boaters, the canal means enormous time and cost savings, because it offers a shortcut of around 450km.
Locks in Brunsbuettel
- The different water levels between the Kiel Canal and the Elbe are balanced out with the help of the lock. The entering ships are raised or lowered to the required height. A lock process takes 45 minutes and the locks are open day and night. There are two locks in Brunsbüttel, one large and one small. Each of them has two lock chambers. Another lock chamber is currently being built. This should be completed in 2020. Due to urgently needed renovation work, the fifth lock chamber is being built. The volume of traffic is too high and a lock would not be possible in the absence of a chamber. If you are interested, there is the opportunity to take part in a lock tour.
Meldorfer Dom
- The St. John's Church in Meldorf is mostly only known as Meldorfer Dom. It is considered to be one of the most important medieval church buildings on the west coast. Regardless of the direction from which you come to Meldorf, the first thing you see is the Meldorfer Dom. The first building was built between 810 and 826 and stood directly on the North Sea on the coastline at that time, which is why it was also used as a navigation mark. It was only through the reclamation of land that the Meldorfer Dom became more and more inland. Until 1140 it was the only church in the area. The current building was built between 1250 and 1300. It was built in the brick Gothic style and has a 59 meter high tower. Today the Meldorfer Dom is the seat of the church district Dithmarschens. The church is currently undergoing major renovations. Because of the cathedral, Meldorf is also known as the "cathedral city in the heart of Dithmarschen".

The traditional dishes are "Mehlbüdel" (flour bags) is a salty dumpling loosened with eggs and seasoned with lemon peel. The prepared dough is wrapped in a cloth and cooked in the pot. The finished flour bag is consumed with sugar, liquid butter and pork cheek meat.
The crabs (North Sea prawns) end up freshly caught on the plate in Dithmarschen. Freshly caught crabs are gray, but they acquire their reddish color when they are cooked on board. - The 1 KOHLosseum has its home in the historic building of the old sauerkraut factory. In the cabbage workshop you can experience how the Dithmarscher cabbage is processed into delicious sauerkraut. - Perlebucht family lagoon in Büsum In 2012, the Perlebucht family lagoon in Büsum was completely redesigned and attracts many vacationers and day tourists to Büsum. - Forest Museum in Burg The Burger Forest Museum is housed in a 21m high observation tower. From here you have a wonderful view of the whole area. The museum has an extensive collection on the forest ecosystem, nature and species protection and hunting. In the forest museum you will get to know the local flora and fauna. For example, you can hear the croaking of the frogs or the singing of the birds. You can also observe a bird's breeding behavior live or learn to read the annual rings of the trees.
