Map of Meldorf

In 1970 Meldorf lost its function as the district town of Süderdithmarschen after the merger with Norderdithmarschen an Heide. In 2013 the city joined the international network of liveable cities Cittaslow connected. The town's landmark is the Sankt Johannis Church, which is built on the highest point of the Geestrück, the market. It is called the Meldorfer Dom in everyday parlance, but does not have the function of a cathedral. To the west, north and south the Geest drops steeply to the marsh. The romantic and small-scale castle district adjoins it to the south-west.

With its design statutes, the city has been trying for many years to maintain its closed and, in large parts, very carefully preserved cityscape with very narrow streets and winding paths. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum and the Dithmarscher Agricultural Museum, the exhibition rooms of the Human Foundation, which maintains many almost extinct crafts with its workshops, and a café and bar scene that is unusual for the rural region are the destination of day visitors from Hamburg and the cities of Schleswig-Holstein.

Learn

Meldorf has a high school steeped in tradition, the Meldorfer learned school. There is an adult education center on site, which also runs Ditmarsia, and an abundantly used city library. In addition, a primary, community, handicapped, special and vocational school.

Work

The largest employer is the Mensch Foundation. To stimulate the local economy, the city wants to build a tourism complex for ecologically compatible tourism at the mouth of the Miele. The city has no tourist tradition, people who want to be innovative here have good opportunities. Because of the existing infrastructure and the favorable property prices, the place is inviting for freelance workers in creative industries and service providers as well as self-employed people who need inexpensive storage space, for example for Internet trading.

Large industrial companies are the Evers print shop on Heider Strasse (B5), which prints high print runs for advertising, the traditional and innovative Aldra window factory and the canning factory on Gemüsestrasse, which is now owned by the Stollenwerk company. The sausage factory Binckebanck on the local border with Nindorf has a factory outlet.

There are numerous supraregional craft businesses, especially in the building trade. The Bauzimmerei Naturbau operates one of the oldest ecological hardware stores in the north on Österstrasse. DB-Regio Bus and Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG have branches.

Contrary to all prejudices against the supposedly stubborn Dithmarscher, the locals are very informative. Just go to the nearest store and ask. Since the natives need a car for every trip, the strangers should be warned, because they wander through the city center in very few minutes.

The feeling (meldorfeeling) for the charm of the city only arises when you take three steps, stop for a coffee, linger (just sit there and look), take three more steps, sit down for coffee and look and so on.

All cellular networks have a very good reception quality here. There are a few places in the pedestrian zone with free WiFi access.

trips

  • By bike, we recommend a trip to the Speichererkoog, a nature reserve between Meldorf and the North Sea. The is located near the Meldorfer Hafen "Lugworm", an information center for the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. In summer, this place can also be reached with the Deichexpress: At the end of the town there is a white bench on which you can wait for someone to pick you up.
  • The Hallig lies before Meldorf 2 Helmet sandHelmsand in the Wikipedia encyclopediaHelmsand (Q20589) in the Wikidata database, the only Hallig Dithmarschens. It can be reached in just under an hour's walk on the dike from the dyke of the Meldorfer Hafen. Hikers shouldn't go to the top of the Hallig until the end of July because many birds breed there. It's very exciting in spring, winter and autumn.
  • At the bathing area 3 Nordermeldorf Mudflat hikes begin all year round.
