background

Rendsburg is the administrative seat of the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district and is located on the German ferry route. Rendsburg is a "divided" city, divided by the Kiel Canal. The part to the south of the canal houses a small amount of residential development, the "Rendsburg Port", the exhibition grounds and extensive agricultural areas. Most of Rendsburg with the old town and the historic Neuwerk district is on the north side of the canal. The only direct connection between the north and south sides of Rendsburg is the pedestrian tunnel. All other connections are outside the city area.

  • The 2 Rendsburg railway bridgeEisenbahnhochbrücke Rendsburg in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaEisenbahnhochbrücke Rendsburg im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsEisenbahnhochbrücke Rendsburg (Q505745) in der Datenbank Wikidata is not only worth seeing for rail fans. Of all bridge structures on Kiel Canal this high bridge is certainly the best known. The trains cross the canal here at a height of 42 m. Guided tours on the Viewing platform at a height of 40 m only take place in the summer months. In order to get from Rendsburg station to the 42 m high bridge, a 5.9 km long "loop" had to be built for the railway.
Of course that is worth seeing Transporter bridge. Who does not know that it is a "suspension ferry", will surely be surprised to see that water between the wooden planks can be seen. But don't worry: the ferry is securely anchored to the bridge. The transporter bridge was opened to traffic on December 2nd, 1913, declared a "Technical Monument" in 1988 and registered for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
