Holstein forms the southern part of the state Schleswig-Holstein. The rivers Eider and Levensau north of Kiel form the border with Schleswig.
For the purposes of this travel guide, it is divided into the following travel regions (from west to east):
- Dithmarschen, the Holstein part of the North Sea coast;
- Central Holstein, see Central Schleswig-Holstein
- Holstein Baltic Sea coast, with the state capital Kiel, the Bay of Lübeck, the peninsula Wagria and the Baltic island Fehmarn,
- Holstein Switzerland with the Bungsberg, the highest point in the state
- The Duchy of Lauenburg with the Holstein part of the Middle Elbe
