background

Up until the Great Migration, fishing was the home of the fishing people who later moved to England and gave it their name. After the year 600 the area was settled by Danes and Jutes (Vikings).

language

High German, Low German (Angeliter Platt) and Danish (Southern Schleswig-Danish) are common in fishing. The Angel Danish (as a variant of South Jutland / Platt Danish), which was spoken in fishing and Schwansen up to the beginning of the 20th century, is no longer spoken, but Danisms have survived in Germany. Petuh, a German-Danish mixed language (mostly with German vocabulary, but Danish syntax and pronunciation) is also spoken, especially in the Flensburg area.

getting there

By plane

The closest major airports are Hamburg (HAM; 125–155 km away; approx. 2 hours by bus and train to Schleswig, 2½ hours to Flensburg) and Billund (BLL; 135-175 km). Only the small airport is even closer Sønderborg (SDG; 50–95 km away), which is only served from Copenhagen, as well as the Sylt Airport (GWT; 90–130 km; 1:45 hours by train and bus to Flensburg).

By train

From most parts of the German-speaking area, you can travel to Hamburg via Hamburg. From there a regional express runs every hour to Schleswig (a good 1½ hours), Tarp and Flensburg (around 2 hours). The Intercity of the Hamburg – Aarhus line also stops twice a day in Flensburg, but it hardly saves time on the Hamburg – Flensburg route compared to the RE. From Kiel there are also regional express trains every hour to Süderbrarup (45 minutes), Sörup, Husby and Flensburg (1:15 hours).

By bus

Flixbus offers direct long-distance bus connections from Berlin or Hamburg to Schleswig and Flensburg several times a day.

In the street

The A7 motorway (Hamburg-Flensburg-Kolding) runs past the western edge of the fishing region.

mobility

The A7 motorway runs to the west of fishing. Two railway lines run through the region: Neumünster - Flensburg (Schleswig, Jübek and Tarp stations) and Kiel - Flensburg (Süderbrarup, Sörup and Husby stations). Regional bus routes exist, but you have to be prepared for detours (e.g. Kappeln - Schleswig via Eckernförde or Flensburg). A car is highly recommended for getting around on fishing grounds. Bike tours are also possible. The ships sailing on the Schlei are almost exclusively excursion ships and are poorly suited to get from A to B.
