The Federal motorway 31 (BAB 31 or A 31, also as Emsland motorway known) connects the East Frisian port city Emden with the Ruhr area. It expires Empty parallel to Ems on their left bank, but mostly at some distance from the river and mostly not far from the German-Dutch border. South of the state border between Lower Saxony and Westphalia, it moves away from the Ems and runs through the western part Münsterland; in doing so, it opens up the cities Gronau, Ahaus, Coesfeld and Bark. Further south it crosses the Hohe Mark Nature Park and finally ends at the motorway triangle Bottrop at the Federal motorway 2. The total length of the motorway is 240 km.
The BAB 31 meets the west of Leer Federal motorway 28, the Bremen via Oldenburg with the Dutch Groningen connects. After the BAB 31 has crossed under the Ems in a tunnel near Leer, the short BAB 280 branches off to the Netherlands at Dreieck Bunde. The BAB 31 runs in a southerly direction Papenburg and Haren past through the Bourtanger moor, continue on Meppen and Nordhorn past, crosses the Schüttorf cross Federal motorway 30 (also section of Europastraße 30), happened bad Bentheim and leads through the western Münsterland to the northern edge of the Ruhr area.
