Meppen is a city in Emsland.
background
The place can look back on a long human settlement history. Archaeological finds indicate the first settlements as early as the Paleolithic around 10,000 BC. down. Further finds from the Early Bronze Age and the Iron Age indicate a more or less continuous settlement in the urban area. The place is mentioned for the first time in writing in the year 834 AD. Already in the years 945/946 Meppen obtained coinage, customs and market rights. In 1252 Meppen came into the possession of the bishop of Muenster. About 100 years later, Bishop Adolf von Münster granted the place city rights and thus also the right to fortify the city. Until 1660, the city was gradually expanded into a fortress. The fortifications were razed around 100 years later at the end of the Seven Years' War. In the following centuries the affiliation changed several times, whereby Meppen was always given regional administrative responsibility. The district administration can still be found today Emsland in Meppen.
