The small fishing village, which arose behind the "Norddeich" (north dike) that was laid out at its current location from 1780 and the port that was founded at the same time (on the site of a place abandoned after a storm surge), gradually developed from a small fishing settlement to a seaside resort, which, however, was still difficult to achieve. In the course of the increasing seaside resort tourism Norderney A ship connection from Norddeich soon became interesting, as the previous journey, first from Bremen and Hamburg and later from Emden, was time-consuming and dependent on the tide. So it was finally decided to build a completely new port facility, which was completed in 1892 - Norddeich Mole was created, with the rest of the country via a branch line from north connected off.

Today around 11,000 scheduled trips are made from Norddeich to Juist and Norderney over the course of the year, which, in addition to transporting holidaymakers, of course also ensure supplies to the islands, and ICs roll into town every hour, across the dykes to the Norddeich Mole ferry station. In addition to the ferry port, a dense network of flights with the small island pilots from the Norddeich airfield ensures good connections between the islands and the mainland.

Norddeich itself now lives mainly from tourism, with numerous hotels, growing holiday home areas and a youth hostel, has a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops, and houses a large health clinic right on the beach. In addition, fishing continues to be a source of income for the place.

From April to October, the place is a lively hustle and bustle of holidaymakers of the place itself and constant traffic to and from the ferry port, from which the ferries to the islands commute several times a day. Especially around the pier, but also around the large parking spaces for travelers, especially to the car-free island of Juist, it is never quiet during the day and sometimes until late in the evening, people with wheeled suitcases and backpacks move from the port to the parking lots and back again , Cars, taxis and an IC every hour bring holidaymakers to the port. So if you are looking for a quiet beach life, you are not necessarily in the right place in Norddeich. But if you like the hustle and bustle around a ferry port, you can combine relaxed beach life with the lively hustle and bustle of a large port - both are only a few 100 m apart. In the late autumn and winter months it is also quieter in Norddeich, even if the ferry service to the islands is of course maintained all year round - as far as the weather conditions allow.
