background

DEU Borkum COA
Map of Borkum

Borkum is part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Since the island is quite far out in the North Sea, the weather conditions are dominated by the ocean climate. Together with the low-pollen air, this special climate has helped Borkum to establish itself as a health resort. The extensive beaches and the dune landscape behind them have long attracted numerous tourists. Today the island is almost completely dependent on tourism. In 2019 there were 308,627 guests with 2,502,644 overnight stays on the island (Source: Chamber of Commerce for East Frisia and Papenburg).

From 1902 to 1996, with short interruptions after the First and Second World War, Borkum was the location of naval units, which at times were of greater economic importance for the island. In the buildings of the former naval seamanship teaching group of the Bundeswehr, which was the island's largest employer until the 1990s, the German Youth Hostel Association has been operating the Youth hostel "Am Wattenmeer".

With the exception of the settlement and infrastructure areas and the airfield, the island of Borkum is part of the national park. The island is divided into three protection zones: Large parts of the island, especially in the east, belong to protection zone I (quiet zone), which can only be entered on designated paths all year round. Entry into protection zone II (intermediate zone) is permitted outside the breeding season, but species protection has priority here as well. Protection zone III (recreation zone) includes, in particular, the bathing beach sections in the south, west and north of the island.

Reformierte Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaReformierte Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsReformierte Kirche (Q2136793) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The church is the only Evangelical Reformed island church in East Frisia. It was built from 1896 to 1897 in a historicist style and merges elements of Art Nouveau and Neo-Gothic. The historicist architecture is based on Dutch brick architecture. The 40 m high church tower is integrated into the building. Around 900 people can be seated in the church and on the gallery. The wooden church furnishings are kept simple. The wooden ceiling is modeled on a ship's floor. A steering wheel serves as a ceiling lamp. The votive ship armed with cannons, which is set up next to the pulpit, dates back to the time of the previous church, perhaps even around 1800. The Reformed tradition is reflected in the fact that instead of the altar in front of the pulpit there is a communion table and the church has no pictures and no crucifix. After the original bronze bell, which weighed 700 kg, was melted down during the First World War, the three chilled cast iron bells, which can still be heard from the church tower today, were purchased for the 25th anniversary of the church in 1922. barrier-freebarrier-free: Access via the south entrance.

It was built in neo-Gothic forms as a small brick hall church with a transept and lantern roof turret. It was expanded to the west as early as 1905. In 1954 a multi-purpose church hall was added to the east. The church was given its present appearance in 1987/1988 by adding a modern enlargement in the west, taking up the lines of the neo-Gothic building, with a spacious gallery and the new bronze portal. The extended church has approx. 450 seats. At the same time it received a tall and slender octagonal bell tower with a four-part bell. The organ with ten registers was built in 1970. The weekday and Sunday services are mainly celebrated by visiting priests. barrier-freebarrier-free.

Christuskirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaChristuskirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsChristuskirche (Q1087287) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Under the political and cultural influence of the Netherlands since the Reformation, the population of Borkum was mostly evangelical reformed. Only after the spa tourism began in the 19th century did Evangelical Lutheran Christians move in. The community asked for donations from bathers and the island's population for the construction of the church. Construction began in 1899 and was completed within two and a half months. The dedication service took place on July 9, 1899. The building was erected from bricks as a long, rectangular structure. The very simple and functional historicist building was reminiscent of a tram depot in terms of design and appearance. From 1958 the church was redesigned. In 1961 the chancel was redesigned and got contemporary stained glass windows. Today four bronze bells hang in the westwork. barrier-freebarrier-free.

It was built in 1576 on the site of the old church tower. On February 14, 1879, a devastating fire broke out in the tower as a result of a stovepipe fire. The tower burned out completely. It was replaced by the new lighthouse. After its completion, the government had the old tower repaired - without a lantern. From 1895 to 1921 it served as a weather observation station for the Deutsche Seewarte Hamburg. In 1980 the city of Borkum acquired the tower and handed over the dilapidated monument to the Heimatverein der Insel Borkum e.V.. From the sheltered viewing platform () there is a clear view of one of the most beautiful parts of the island after 150 steps.

It is fenced in on a dune southwest of the village and can be easily reached from there with a 15-minute walk. The tower was made from 27 mm thick cast steel plates and screwed together on the spot. It performed its service from 1981 to 2003. Until about 1966 a water level signaling point was built on the lighthouse, which was operated with signal bodies during the day and with light signals at night. In 1967 the Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority expanded the tower into the first radar station of the German-Dutch land radar chain Ems. It is currently not released for inspection.

In the course of time, the number of guests continued to grow and ever larger hotels, clinics and new buildings were built. The pressure generated by the water tower was therefore no longer sufficient to supply the higher floors of the buildings with water. It was shut down and the tower head dismantled in 1981. The original height of 29 m was reduced to 23 m. In 1983, the district government placed the water tower under a preservation order. The newly founded Watertoorn Börkum eV association takes care of its preservation and takes over the building and the area around the tower on a long lease for 49 years . The tower is being extensively restored and given a tower head again. After successful exterior renovation and repair of the tower, a water museum and information center will be built inside. Every Thursday at 10:15 am there is an information lecture in the tower, duration about 1 hour (tickets are available in the local history museum).Open: Tue-Sun 10: 00-17: 00.

In July 2014, it was able to take over the medical care of the people from Borkum and the many vacationers with its internal specialist practice with 16 set up and 8 designated beds.

There are also various specialist clinics and rehabilitation facilities on the island.
