Map of Juist

Juist is an island 17km long and less than 1km wide, located east of Borkum and west of Norderney; all three islands were believed to have been part of the island of Bant, which was broken up by a storm surge in the 12th century. The wide sandy beach with dunes is in the north, the tidal flats with salt marshes in the south of the island.

In the main town of Juist in the middle of the island you will find the ferry pier, spa administration, hotels, restaurants, shops, swimming pool, etc. The airport is about 4 km to the east, the small town of Loog about 2 km to the west. West of Loog is the Hammersee, a freshwater lake that was created in 1932 after a dam breached. (The island of Juist was divided into two parts in the area of today's Hammersee until 1870 after a storm surge in 1651.) West of the Hammersee there is a small wood. In the west, the island then merges into the large Billriff sandbank.

Large areas of the island are part of the quiet zone of the Wadden Sea National Park and may only be entered on approved paths.

In 2019 there were 130,832 guests with 1,079,366 overnight stays on the island (Source: Chamber of Commerce for East Frisia and Papenburg).

getting there

The flight time with the Island flyers is about 15 minutes, the price for a one-way flight is 45, - € (as of 2017) per person and way.

With the ferry

Main Products: Ferries in Germany

Rail travelers travel to the "Norden-Norddeich Mole" station (the station is also served by intercity trains). Car travelers drive to Norddeich and can park their vehicle in one of the shipping company's parking facilities. There is no car transport to the island. A shuttle bus runs from there for € 1 per person to the Juist ferry terminal in Norddeich Mole. Travelers with the shuttle bus must ensure that they do not get off at the ferry terminal for Norderney.

The ferry tickets can be bought at the pier. Day tourists can pay the daily spa fee in the ticket house.

The ferry - On the relatively small ferry it is often very crowded and cramped, unlike on the Norderney ferry! The crossing takes over 90 minutes. The restaurant is very expensive and the service could be improved! Many children quickly get bored on the long crossing. The toilets on board are handicapped accessible and (as of 2016) newly renovated.

The ferry connection is depending on the tide. The ship can therefore call at the island a maximum of twice a day.Fares 2016: Day return ticket: € 21.75 (children € 10), return ticket valid for 2 months: € 33 (children from 6-13 years € 16.50). The day tickets already include the tourist tax (children are exempt from the tourist tax).

Luggage (maximum weight 30 kg) is transported free of charge with a ticket.

See ferry schedule and further information www.reederei-frisia.de.

mobility

When you arrive at the port, the visitor's tax is settled and, if necessary, large pieces of luggage are accepted. Then a barrier is passed. Horse buses are waiting for the tourists, which will then bring them comfortably to their accommodation. Otherwise you can only use the bike or walk. If your accommodation is not in the remote Loog, you can do without horses. A horse-drawn bus runs to the Loog according to the timetable (plus trips are tailored to the ferry schedule).

activities

The wide beach of Juist is highly recommended. Information on the current water temperatures on Juist can be found on the website of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.

In addition, the Hammersee (the only freshwater lake on the East Frisian Islands) as well as the "wood" and the Bill-Ende are very interesting. On foot or by rental bike you can reach the excursion restaurant Domain Bill at the western end of the island (closed on Wednesdays).

To the east of the town of Juist there is the Otto-Leege nature trail, which leads from a dune in the north past the goldfish pond with woods to the south side of the island. Display boards explain flora and fauna as well as the water supply of the island. You can now easily reach Cafe Wilhelmshöhe (closed on Tuesdays).

Sports activities are possible in the sea water adventure pool, on the tennis courts in the Ostdorf, while kite surfing on the beach east of the village, in the multi-generation fitness course (Januspark) or on the boules courts (An't Diekskant). There is a cinema in the main town (operating cinema like in the old days!).

shop

The Prices are very high on Juist in all sectors and well above the national average. This is because everything that is needed on the island has to be transported there (whether ice cream, waffle; hair gel, grain of sand for building, etc.) and the freight costs are "plentiful".

Just the island Spiekeroog its expensive! For example, an ice ball on Juist costs up to € 2.50. In North dike the ball costs € 0.60.
