Island character

Like every North Sea island, Spiekeroog has its own special character. Spiekeroog calls itself the green island. While there are cars, large hotels and entertainment facilities on other islands, Spiekeroog is one of the quietest North Sea islands. The small village is always full of people in the main season, but due to the low houses and narrow streets it usually looks quiet, contemplative and idyllic. Spiekeroog is therefore particularly suitable for holidaymakers who are looking for peace and quiet, want to swim with the family or, even in winter, want to go for walks. The audience is more academic, alternative, calm and well-off. There are also many youth and school groups. If you are looking for a dignified short vacation or want to party, Spiekeroog is rather poorly served.

Familys

The island is very suitable for children up to 8 years of age. The island offers a multitude of advantages for this age group. The children can play with sand and water in a variety of ways on the beach. Be sure to take enough sand toys with you, a shovel should not be missing. The freedom of movement for the children is hardly restricted and hardly dangerous on the paths. It is ideal, for example, to learn to ride a bike on the island. A balance bike for smaller children is a good idea. If necessary, you can borrow a handcart or bring it with you.

Older children and young people can actively interact with the Sports program, kite surfing, sailing and horse riding.

senior citizens

The island is ideal for seniors (including early retirees). However, the disadvantage for them is the poor medical care. You should also be able to walk well in order to be able to reach at least the main beach (approx. 10-15 minutes walk). If you are limited on foot due to health problems, you can still do that as a taxi "Island mobi" to order.

People with reduced mobility

For people with restricted mobility a lot is being done on Spiekeroog. However, the island is not completely barrier-free, as Spiekeroog is a traditional and natural island. A largely barrier-free ferry crossing is possible with the combined ferry "Spiekeroog IV". Then stand on the island Inselmobil, CadWeezle and Strandmobile available. A Overview about the accessibility of public facilities is a useful aid.

dogs

For nature conservation reasons (protection zones of the national park), slightly different ones apply on the island Regulations, leash is compulsory in large parts of the island. Dogs must also be on a leash in the village area. Dogs are also not allowed on the main beach. The exception here is the dog beach with a free-range zone. Here the animals are allowed to run around freely under supervision (but please make sure that no other holidaymakers are bothered). Beach chairs are specially rented to dog owners near the dog beach. The ferry ticket for dogs costs € 46.40 (return trip).

Flora and fauna

Trees are naturally in short supply on Spiekeroog due to the special habitat. However, man has started systematic planting to end the drifting sand and dune migration in the settlement area. Species such as black pines and dwarf oaks, which are resistant to salt, were planted. Birch trees can also be found in the dunes. Today Spiekeroog has a relatively green belt of dunes (even with a few small forests).

Museum horse train

A nostalgic sight: the museum horse-drawn train at the Westend terminus

A ride on the Museum horse trainthat the village dated 6 railway station with the 7 West end connects on the west beach. The line was part of the former island railway, whose operation was discontinued in 1981 with the construction of the new port near the village. The 1.2 km long route, which is still in existence today, is regularly driven several times a day by horse company. The journey time by train is 12-15 minutes one way. However, the transport capacity of the small train is of course very limited. But if you have the chance of a seat, you shouldn't miss this experience. A foretaste of the tour is offered by a nice Video from the series "Typical" of the NDR. In addition to the horse-drawn tram on Spiekeroog, Germany only owns Chub Another horse-drawn museum in Saxony that runs regularly.

The island railway will not operate in 2020, and traffic will resume from the start of the 2021 season. However, there is still a financial obstacle to overcome, see here.

Tourist Attractions

Dune landscape

de Utkieker
Dunes, beach & plants
In the dunes

There is an attractive dune landscape on the island. The 24.1 m high "White Dune" is by the way the highest natural elevation in East Frisia. The entire eastern part of the island ("Ostplate") is a nature reserve.

Many beautiful, winding paths lead through the dune area, which are ideal for walks. These paths are often well equipped with benches so that it is not far to the next rest break. There is shade and shelter in some of the woods. If you want to look far into the country, you can visit the viewpoints on the dunes:

  • At the 1 "De Utkieker" lookout point "De Utkieker" has been standing since 2007, this is a naked, very wiry, human sculpture in the form of a "far-sighted one". The 3.5 m bronze sculpture is the work of the Cologne artist Hannes Helmke, who has been spending his summer vacation on Spiekeroog for years. Incidentally, the placement of the sculpture was controversial (protection of the landscape). A wide panoramic view of the island opens up from the vantage point, stretching as far as Wangerooge. There is also a telescope and a bench.
  • 2 Viewpoint at the beach access "ev. Leisure home "
  • At the 3 Viewpoint at the beach access "mother and child health clinic" there is a small beach view to the north.
  • The 4 "Frederikental" viewing dune is east of the village on the way to the Herrmann Lietz school (environmental center Wittbuelten). Here the visitor has a beautiful panoramic view of the dunes and a distant view in northeast direction of the beach on the Ostplate.

Old island church
  • The 1 Old island churchAlte Inselkirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaAlte Inselkirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsAlte Inselkirche (Q435642) in der Datenbank Wikidata was built in 1696. It is the oldest island church on the East Frisian Islands. The altarpiece is neo-Gothic. The altar table and the altarpiece were made by the islanders. The Renaissance pulpit is dated to the 16th century and is decorated with Low German inscriptions and floral motifs. According to tradition, the late medieval Pietà and parts of the pulpit come from a ship of the Spanish Armada that was stranded off the island in 1586. The offering box was made from flotsam in 1676. The windows, decorated with symbols of the evangelists, have features of Art Nouveau. The windows were donated by regular island guests. In the cemetery at the island church there are several gravestones from the 18th century.
  • The 2 New Evangelical Church was built in 1961. It serves the islanders as a "summer church", as the old island church does not offer enough space in the summer months when tourists visit the island. Findings during the excavation work suggest that the site was used as a cemetery from around 1600 to 1750. A tombstone plate serves as the altar plate. This is to document the connection to the Old Island Church and the surrounding cemetery.

It has the shape of a polygonal pyramid or an Indian tent. The copper roof extends to the ground and is criss-crossed by three narrow window strips. more...
  • The small, beautiful, well-groomed one 4 rose Garden is in the middle of the village. Small, square, fine - a small rose oasis.
  • The 5 Old elm, the 350-year-old tree veteran (Flatter-Ulme (Ulmus laevis), stands in the village on the corner of Noorderloog / Slurpad. It is a solitary tree that defines the townscape. The elm towers above the building on the street corner and protrudes far into the main street. Rarely strong Copy for the North Sea coast.
  • The small 6 Spa gardens wants to be discovered. The two entrances are not that easy to find. The approximately 100 x 150 m large facility in the village has a dense, shady tree population and a pond with "bridges". The park is therefore a nice place to relax on very hot or very windy days. Otherwise there is a playground and a public toilet (located on the garden path).

The two longer trips are:

  • the hike around the western end and the southern tip of the island (about 2 to 3 hours)

shop

Newspapers are only available after the first ferry arrives. The food supply is sufficient, but the prices are in comparison the highest of the North Sea islands. There are two grocery stores, a delicatessen shop with a cheese counter and a well-stocked selection of wines, and two bakeries. Several providers offer fresh fish. Other goods (except toys and textiles) are almost only available on the mainland. There is a bookstore where you can find something for every taste.

Food

kitchen

Since most of the accommodations are holiday apartments, it is a good idea to cater for yourself to a large extent. There are two small supermarkets, a very well-stocked small gourmet shop with an above-average range of wines, a well-stocked cheese counter and organic products, and two bakeries. If you want to go out to eat, you will find a sufficiently large selection. There are cheap fish snacks, a pizza delivery service, a few restaurants with good North German fare and several restaurants for high demands.

One of them is in the Hotel Inselfriede. Inconspicuous from the outside and not particularly inviting, you feel at home inside thanks to the Nordic cosiness of the restaurant. The kitchen is varied, here they cook with fresh ingredients and especially the matjes are recommended. If you are not a hotel guest with half board, you should reserve a table early, otherwise there may be bottlenecks.

The Capitänshaus restaurant and the hotel's own restaurant in the Hotel zur Linde also meet high demands.

nightlife

Evening mood - west of the women's pad
Old Laramie

There is no classic nightlife on Spiekeroog. Anyone looking for that is fundamentally wrong on the island. In the evenings you sit comfortably in the tea room or in the restaurant for a chat. In the evenings, the "Old Laramie", also Café Westend called. The "Old Laramie" is an institution on the island that is regionally known far beyond the island (see corresponding Wikipedia article).

From the dike you can always enjoy spectacular sunsets. Otherwise, on a clear summer night, just sit down on a bench and enjoy the starry sky. This is much more impressive on Spiekeroog than in many large cities with nocturnal "light pollution".
