All sights are within walking distance, that's why Jever is also called the city of short distances. The historic old town with stately town houses characterizes the cityscape.

background

In addition to the main town of Jever, the municipality of Jever also includes the districts of Moorwarfen, Rahrdum, Cleverns, Sandel and Sandelermöns. The city is also the district capital of District of Friesland in Niedersachsen.

history

In 1850 a treasure of 5,000 Roman silver coins was found here. It is believed that there was a settlement of the Chauken here at the turn of the times. Around the year 826, Jever came under the rule of the Danish Prince Hariold. At that time the area belonged to the County of Rüstringen. At the end of the 12th century at the latest, Jever came under the rule of Oldenburg.

In the 10th and 11th centuries Jever was a seaport and trade flourished. Over time, the port silted up and Jever lost direct access to the sea, but it remained an important trading center. It is known that since 1347 the residents of Jever call themselves city citizens. Around the year 1400 there were close trade relations with the Vitalienbrothers, who broke the blockade between the Danes and Sweden. After the death of Edo Wiemken the Younger, the last chief of Jeverland, the area temporarily came under the rule of the East Frisian Count Edzard the Great. Maria von Jever, Edo Wiemken's heir, restored Jever's independence. It is also known from its rainy days that the city officially received city rights, which is why it is still known today as “Marienstadt”. After their death, the area fell to Oldenburg in 1575.

In the course of the 17th century Jever came to the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst. In 1793 the Jeverland came under Russian rule, because the Russian tsarina Catherine II was a sister of the last Zerbst prince. Through the occupation of French troops in 1807, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Holland along with East Frisia. Therefore, in 1810, including Holland, it came directly to the French Empire and thus under Napoleonic rule. In 1813, the Jeverland returned to Russia, and in 1818 it became part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Between 1856 and 1933, the city had 1st class town charter (corresponds to a city not belonging to a district).
