Langeoog is a "typical" East Frisian island with a chain of dunes, grassland behind, and narrowing towards the east. The beach is completely natural. There are no groynes to prevent the removal of sand, only protective plantings (hedges) on the edges of the dunes. Langeoog is very positionally stable. To this end, extensive stabilization measures are being carried out on the dunes. The island was discovered for tourism as early as the middle of the 19th century.

To the west, the island is closed off by the Flinthörn. There is one there 1 Observation platform and there is a kind of educational trail with information about bird life and the landscape. Parts of the Flinthörn are a resting area for the birds. It must not be entered.

In the south of the island lies the 1 portPort in the Wikipedia encyclopediaHafen (Q1391962) in the Wikidata database. From the harbor, longer walks are possible on two dikes and on the road to the village. Between the village and the port there is a Island grove, which was planted on the former military airport after World War II.

The areas east of the village are largely uninhabited. Even further east comes the Große Schlopp, where the island was divided into two parts after the Christmas flood in 1717. Here you will find an approx. 1 km long dike-like artificial dune towards the sea and the 1 SchloppseeSchloppsee in the encyclopedia WikipediaSchloppsee in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsSchloppsee (Q2239927) in the Wikidata database. The responsible pastor of Langeoog has his seat in Esens.
There had been no Catholics on Langeoog since the Reformation. Only the emergence of bathing tourism brought Catholic spa guests to the island from the end of the 19th century. Since the summer of 1910, Holy Mass has been celebrated by foreign priests during the travel season.
The needs of the Nazi armaments factories on the coast and, after the end of the war, the influx of East German expellees gave rise to a small local Catholic community, which today has 250 members. The church was built for them, but even more so for the holidaymakers, and the foundation stone was laid on January 15, 1962. It was named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers, and was consecrated on June 4, 1964 by the Osnabrück bishop Helmut Wittler. The plans came from the Göttingen architect Lucie Hildebrand. The first remodeling and expansion work was completed in 1973. After extensive renovations, the church was consecrated on June 23, 2002 by Bishop Franz-Josef Bode. Today it belongs to the coastal parish community.
The design idea of the church is a ship's bow protruding upwards from the earth. The tower has the shape of a fore stiffener. This earned him the nicknames seagull slide and nun slide among the Langeoogers. Since the last renovation work, the interior has been wide and bright and offers a view of the island landscape through clear glass windows. The cross is designed as a steering wheel.
