background

View from the runway to the terminal

Flight attempts have been made on the Neuenlander Feld site since 1910, and the airport was not officially inaugurated until July 18, 1920. During this time, the brothers Henrich and Wilhelm Focke, as well as Georg Wulf, began building aircraft and testing them on the airport grounds. In the course of history, the Focke-Wulf company became part of the Airbus Group through takeovers and mergers. After the war, the airport served as the US Air Force Base before reopening January 27, 1949. On May 1, 1956, the Lufthansa Commercial Aviation School was opened in the immediate vicinity of the airport. To this day, pilots are trained there in theory and practice, not just for Lufthansa. From October 2015 the research aircraft Polar 5 and Polar 6 of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) will have their home airport in Bremen. The aircraft are equipped for research flights to the Arctic and Antarctic and, when not in use, are stored in a hangar at the airport for the necessary maintenance and repair work. An Airbus factory is adjacent to the airport. Airbus wings are manufactured in Bremen and flown with the Beluga to Toulouse for final assembly. Further components for the aerospace industry are manufactured in the plant by its subsidiary Astrium. Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) coordinates flight movements in northern Germany in lower airspace up to an altitude of 7,500 meters from Bremen. The airport has two take-off points. and runways. The large, in east-west orientation (09/27) with a length of 2040 meters and a width of 45 meters and the small, in south-west orientation (23), only as a runway for small aircraft, with a length of 700 meters and a width of 45 meters. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are located in the main building with a total of 5 passenger boarding bridges through which all airlines are handled. The exception is Ryanair, which has its own building with Terminal E. There is also the General Aviation Terminal (GAT).

After Ryanair added the airport to its route network in 2007, it became the nickname for international marketing City Airport Bremen used. The name of the airport became in 2016 Bremen Airport and on November 29, 2017, in memory of the former mayor Hans Koschnick, officially too Bremen Airport Hans Koschnick changed.
