Osnabrück - Osnabrück

Osnabrück

The town Osnabrück is in the southwest Lower Saxony.

background

Osnabrück was founded around 780 by Charlemagne as a bishopric. In 1648 the Peace of Westphalia was concluded in the town halls of the cities of Münster and Osnabrück, which is why the city is also known as the "City of Peace". Osnabrück was also a Hanseatic city until 1669 and has been part of the New Hanseatic League since 1980. Since Osnabrück never left the Hanseatic League, it can be said that Osnabrück is the oldest Hanseatic city of all.

Osnabrück lies on the Hase, between Teutoburg Forest and Wiehengebirge.

Practical advice

The bus routes are clearly structured and the city center is very clear. Even if you get lost in the city center, at some point you always end up on the wide Ringstrasse (Wall).

At night, greater vigilance is required at Neumarkt, as more crimes are being committed there. The police tried to counteract this with video surveillance.

The buses are not always on time, which the bus companies honestly confirm on their own. It must be due to many construction sites and high traffic volumes. But: some buses, especially regional ones, even leave too early.

Osnabrück has the area code (0541). The postcodes are from 49074 (city center) to 49082 (Nahne / Sutthausen).
