background

The bridge cycle path connects the former Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Osnabrück. The path builds a bridge between the two cities; However, his name also stands for the many large and small bridges that have to be crossed on the two partial routes. There are two variants:

  • The "east route" with 149 kilometers follows the old trade route between Osnabrück and Bremen through the Great bog and is roughly based on the course of today's federal highway 51
  • The "west route" with 165 kilometers touches the city of the Varus Battle (Bramsche) and the recreation area Dammer Berge and roughly follows the course of the "Rabbit Railway" from Osnabrück via Bramsche and Vechta to Bremen.

Together, the two variants have a total length of 314 kilometers.

preparation

If bus lines are to be used en route - for example to shorten or interrupt the journey - this must be planned precisely here, see below Public transportation.

getting there

Public transportation

The main train stations in Osnabrück and Bremen are connected to the long-distance traffic of Deutsche Bahn from all directions. Many local public transport lines also stop there.

The east route of the bridge cycle route Osnabrück - Bremen is accompanied (albeit partly at a distance) by the regional express RE 9 (Osnabrück - Bremerhaven).

On the western route you are always close to the RE 18 (Osnabrück - Oldenburg - Wilhelmshaven) and RB 58 (Osnabrück - Vechta - Bremen) lines. But even here you have to plan a few kilometers to the train stations.

Individual points along the bridge cycle path can also be reached by bus. However, precise planning and information is necessary here. The website of the regional rail bus company is helpful here Weser-Ems bus as well as the timetable information at fahrplaner.info. It should be noted, however, that bus traffic is significantly restricted on Sundays, public holidays and Saturday afternoons. Sometimes there are no buses at all at the times mentioned. The cities of Osnabrück and Bremen and the cities and municipalities in the immediate vicinity are excluded from this. A lot of bus routes in the country only run in school traffic or only as call buses. It is better to try to get to the nearest train station if possible.

For more links on how to get here by public transport, see Web links.

By bicycle

You can also travel by bike for a bike tour. Alternatively, it is also possible to create a longer tour from several bike tours. For example, in Paderborn started to over Bielefeld on the Teuto-Senne railway cycle route to get to Osnabrück. From there you drive on the bridge bike path to Bremen, to get there on the Weser cycle path to Bremerhaven or Hannoversch Münden to cycle.

In the street

The two starting and destination cities of Osnabrück and Bremen can be easily reached via various motorways and federal highways, and the two branches of the bridge cycle path are also very easy to find via Autobahn 1 and a dense network of easy-to-use federal, state and district roads.

If you arrive by bike on the luggage rack, you should not necessarily park your car in the two large cities of Osnabrück and Bremen, but rather in one of the quieter suburbs. This also saves parking fees. In order to get from the car to the start or from the finish to the parked car, you can take your bike with you on public transport. Don't forget to buy a bike card!

A number of hotels also offer a pick-up and delivery service to the nearest intermediate point on the bridge cycle path. To ask!

Detour

If you have the time and inclination, you can also explore the region by car, for example if your buttocks hurt too much or the weather is not necessarily bike-friendly. The region’s car holiday routes are ideal here: Artland route, Bramgau route, Pit stop route or the Street of the Megalithic Culture.

Another holiday route is the Lower Saxony Mühlenstrasse. This is also an indication that there are numerous historic mills worth seeing in the region that is crossed by the bridge cycle path Osnabrück - Bremen, which are also worth a detour. There are various water, wind and other mills here. If the mills should also be viewed from the inside, possibly even during operation, please inquire in advance via the Internet, the daily press or by simply calling on site whether a visit is possible. Many mills are lovingly cared for by mill associations. There is sure to be a mill enthusiast who would like to introduce his mill to cyclists.

This is a good opportunity to take a look at the mills in operation German mill day. It takes place every year on Whit Monday. In the meantime, over 1,000 wind and water mills across Germany take part in Mill Day. A little anecdote: The nucleus of the German Milling Day is in the Lechtinger mill in Wallenhorst. This mill is located a few meters above the western route of the bridge cycle path. The association "Windmühle Lechtingen e.V." established one on Whit Monday 1987 Mill day a, which a few years later initially to the Lower Saxony Mill Day before he went to the German Mill Day has been.
