background
Dams is a city in the district Vechta in north-western Lower Saxony. The city is partly in Dümmer Nature Park. The dumber (also Dumber lake) is about 10 km west of the city, the ridge of the Dammer Mountains limits the city in the east. The Wiehengebirge lies south of Damme.
The area around Damme was already a settlement area well before Christian times, as evidenced by various finds such as Stone Age large stone graves on the Dümmer, Bronze Age and Iron Age grave finds and Säschsische ramparts.
Like the entire Vechta region, Damme is still a strongly Catholic city, which - in addition to a proportion of over 60% Catholics in the total population - is reflected in the somewhat unusual carnival custom, a monastery and several Catholic parishes.

- The Dammer Carneval has existed since 1614 - that is, for 400 years. The traditional carnival parades take place one week before Shrove Monday. This somewhat unusual custom goes back to the order of the Bishop of Münster in 1892, who set a 40-hour prayer time in the middle of the carnival time in order to put an end to the carnival that he complained about. The citizens of Dammer, on the other hand, did not want to let their fun be taken away and moved their carnival without further ado by a week - which has been maintained to this day.
