The castle, one of the main works of the North German Baroque, was built under the Wittelsbach prince Clemens August, who is not only Elector and Prince Archbishop of Colognebut at the same time bishop of Hildesheim, Paderborn, Muenster, Osnabrück and previously Bishop of regensburg was, in the remote hunting grounds of Niederstift Münster from 1737 to 1746 according to plans by the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun (from which Augustusburg Castle in Bruehl (Rhineland) originates), erected as a cross-shaped two-storey building on a circular castle square. Eight axes in the shape of a hunting star emanate from the palace square, between which eight pavilions are set, one of which is a church (St. Hubertus Court Chapel) with an attached Capuchin monastery, which is still active. The buildings have a uniform design made of bricks and are structured with ashlar. The original equipment of the system has been preserved.

The semicircular curved one is on the way to Sögel Stables. At the end of the line of sight from the monastery there is a small one Gloriette. The castle is surrounded by a 42 hectare park with a pond, in the park the monastery garden with mighty yew hedges.
