The town Papenburg lies in the north of the river landscape and natural region Emsland. With its port, it is the southernmost seaport city in Germany and borders on the south East Frisia. The district Aschendorf is one of the oldest known places in Lower Saxony.

Papenburg is the longest and oldest fen town, a canal town and southernmost seaport town in Germany. Originating from a fen colony, Papenburg can look back on a history of over 1250 years, which is closely connected with the Ems and the canals, with peat extraction, shipping and industrialization.

By train

The train station is in the northern center 1 Papenburg (Ems)(without spaces in bahn.de), every type of train stops here. At the southern one 2 Train station of the district Aschendorf only stop the local trains.

Transfer stations are Rheine, if coming from the south, and Leer (Ostfriesl) (without spaces in bahn.de)when coming from the north.

The quickest way to travel from Frankfurt am Main is by ICE on the Kassel – Hanover – Bremen route, from there on with the regional express via Leer; alternatively with ICE / IC via Cologne. A somewhat slower route is with the Intercity via Mainz and Münster to Papenburg.
