With the construction of the fortress (Vesting Bourtange), which could block a passage over the Bourtanger Moor, was begun in 1580 to help the Spanish troops entering the city Groningen stopped, im Eighty Years War of their connection into that Münsterland to cut off. The fortress, never conquered in the following years, flourished until the middle of the 18th century and then gradually fell into disrepair until it was finally abandoned in 1851. In the meantime, more and more farmers had settled in the fortress grounds and leveled parts of the complex. After the Second World War there was a decline in agriculture and the present village was about to give up around 1960. The municipality of Vlagtwedde then decided to reconstruct the facility as it was in 1742. This has been done with the inclusion of preserved parts and buildings since 1964 and was essentially completed in the 1990s. Since then, Bourtange has offered the restored image of a mid-18th century fortress with numerous museums and activities.
