The province borders in the north on the Wadden Sea, in the northeast on the Ems estuary with the Dollard, in the east to the German state Lower Saxony, in the south to the province Drenthe and to the west to the province Fryslân.

The province includes three small, uninhabited Wadden Islands: Rottumeroog, Rottumerplaat and Zuiderduintjes.

The province is also known as Stad en Ommelanden (City and surrounding area), because historically the city (originally Saxon) and the surrounding country (originally Frisian) fought with each other for a long time. The three historical Ommelander ‘’ waiting ’’ are:

  • Hunsingo
  • Fivelingo and that
  • Westerkwartier.

Not to the Ommelanden counting:

  • The Oldambt,
  • Gorecht and
  • Westerwolde.

The Ommelanden and Oldambt were mostly of Frisian origin until the 15th century, the city of Groningen, Gorecht and Westerwolde were (Lower) Saxon. Today Lower Saxon dialects are spoken almost everywhere in the Ommelanden. In the Westerkwartier and some villages on the border to Friesland is partly spoken in Frisian.
