Middelburg - Middelburg

Middelburg

Middelburg is the capital of Dutch province ZeelandThe city is located on the peninsula Walcheren. In addition to the city of Middelburg, the places also belong Arnemuiden, St. Laurens as well as Nieuw- and St. Joosland to the municipality of Middelburg.

background

In the Carolingian era, a small settlement was built near some of the gullies. Around 880 a refuge was built northeast of it, which was conveniently located in a curve of the Arne. In 1217 Middelburg received city rights from the Count of Flanders and the Count of Holland. When the Arne silted up, the town was connected to the Sloe by a new canal (1535). In 1574 the city was captured by Dutch troops after a long siege.

After 1585 Middelburg experienced its golden century. The “Chambers” for Zeeland of the United East Indies (VOC) and the West Indies Compagnie (WIC) settled in the city. The economic boom led to urban expansions like that Nieuwe Stad around the Oostkerk. This heyday ended around 1660, with the establishment of the Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie (MCC) 1720 provided a slight renewal.

The French period (1795-1813) heralded a long decline, which lasted into the 20th century despite the construction of the canal through Walcheren and the Vlissingen - Roosendaal railway line.

On May 17, 1940, a huge fire as a result of a German bombing destroyed a large part of the city center. In 1944, a large part of the city was flooded when the Allies destroyed the dikes at Walcheren to drive away the German occupiers. In the autumn of the same year the city was again heavily shelled.

On November 4, 1944, Middelburg was liberated and the reconstruction could begin. Most of this was done in the old style, so that today the city has the appearance of an old historical city again. Between 1988 and 1992 a new residential area was built on the former VOC site around the Dokhaven. In 2004 the city administration moved from the city center to a new administration building on the canal.

At the beginning of the 12th century A Romanesque monastery church was built, which in 1255 was replaced by a larger Romanesque-Gothic church, the current one Koorkerk (Eng .: choir church), was replaced. Not much later, a parish church was built on its west side, which was consecrated to St. Nicholas. Today this is the one New Kerk (German: New Church). The abbey complex was greatly expanded in the Middle Ages, and the abbot was one of the most powerful lords of Zeeland. After the Reformation, the Nicolaaskerk was dedicated to Protestant honorary service in 1577, the Koorkerk followed in 1597. The provincial government moved into the abbey complex. The Tussenkerk (Eng .: Zwischenkirche), the separated western part of the Koorkerk, was in 1659 as Illustrious school (higher school) put into use. When the Germans bombed the city on May 17, 1940, the abbey complex went up in flames. Between 1941 and 1954 the churches were rebuilt in their old splendor. After his death in 1649, the work was continued under the leadership of Arend van 's-Gravensande. When he died in 1662, Louis Jolijt succeeded him. In 1661 the population rebelled against excessive taxes on wine and beer, which financed the building of the church. Three years later the building was idle. Inside, the church appears spacious and bright. The double-walled dome is supported by eight heavy Ionic columns and crowned by a lantern. The city coat of arms is emblazoned above the main entrance. The dome, which can be reached via a narrow staircase, offers a beautiful view of the interior of the church and, from the outer gallery, of the city.Open: May Oct Thu, Jun Sep Tue - Thu, Jul Aug Tue Fri 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Jul - Aug Thu 12.30 p.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch break concert.
