background

It began with a settlement on a "Kreekrücken", a watercourse filled with sand that over time has developed into an elevated area. The current Goes was built next to a creek called "de Korte Gos." From the 10th century AD, the village quickly grew into a town, because the location with the port was favorable for trade. A church of Maria is mentioned as early as 1200.

Then came a period of prosperity, which was practically only ended by a great fire in 1554, which destroyed almost the entire city. Incidentally, the fire started in a salt boiler house.

The defensive structures from the Middle Ages, which are still visible today, were built by a Maurits van Oranje, who as Maurits of Nassau at the castle Dillenburg in Hesse grew up with an uncle while his father led the uprising against the Spanish conquerors in the Netherlands.

The city suffered no damage in the 1st and 2nd World War. Even when many dikes broke all around during the great storm surge in 1953, the city was spared because a dike at Kattendijke could be repaired with the last of one's strength.

From 1960 the industry developed more and more. From the formerly large moor area De Poel there is nothing to be seen today. If you are on the highway towards the coast of Walcheren drives, you can see a large trade / industrial area on the right. Since the existing water has to stay somewhere, artificial lakes / canals have been created, which the residents gladly accept as ice rinks when it is cold.
