The landmark of Westkappel

West chapel is a coastal town that has grown from a dyke village to a seaside resort Walcheren in the Dutch province Zeeland and belongs to the church Veere. The w: Scheldtwhich originated in France has is already in the North Sea passed over and the tide on the coast determine beach life. The beach between Vlissingen and Westkapelle is also known as the "Zeeland Riviera" because of its south-facing location.

background

The settlement on the coast developed into an important trading town, which received city rights in 1223. In 1228 the dunes in front of the city had almost disappeared. Eventually part of the city and the harbor disappeared in the waves of the North Sea. Inland, the construction of a new church and the construction of the sea dike began, which have been systematically raised and fortified since then. Until the Second World War, Westkapelle formed a close community of dike builders who took care of the maintenance of the dike. On October 3rd, 17th and 19th, 1944 the sea dyke was bombed by English planes to put Walcheren under water and thus to drive away the German occupiers. A large part of the village was destroyed and 180 people were killed. After the hole was closed again in 1945, the village was rebuilt in the old complex. German families with children began to enjoy visiting this small place in the 1960s.

In front of the radar tower and the Sea Rescue House (Dutch only) begins the approximately 1 km long beautiful sandy beach, which ends at the dike. After another 500 m long dike, which has already been covered by sand, a long one closes up Vlissingen Extensive beach that runs in front of some very high dunes. Just in front of the center of the seaside resort Zoutelande the coast protection has built a dike again for safety.

Storm and spring tides threaten the coast, especially in the cold season. Zwakke schakels Areas are named that need protection from a storm that can be expected every 4,000 years on average. The vulnerabilities in Walcheren and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen have largely been remedied, dunes and dykes have been increased. Nevertheless, every 5 years, sand is pumped from the sea to the coast with huge pipelines to increase the beach. The last sand flush could be seen until June 11, 2016.

By bicycle

Two major European long-distance cycle paths lead through the seaside resort, and they share the same route here. It is the North Sea Cycle Route (also known as North Sea Cycle Route (EuroVelo 12) or country-specific North Sea Route (LF1)) and the European cycle route R1. They connect Westkapelle to the north with The hague above Hook of Holland, always along the North Sea coast, and Vlissingen in the southeast. The LF1 is in the cyclemap Openstreetmap (: please jump to: enter Westkapelle) drawn in, as well as the bicycle junctions. Also the long-distance hiking trail European long-distance hiking trail E9 partly goes along the LF1 if you want to hike along the bike path and not along the dunes and the beach. The cycle path behind the dunes has now (Nov. 2015) been widened.

mobility

Map of Westkapelle

Westkapelle is not very big. Everything can be explored on foot. Otherwise of course that is bicycle with or without pedal assistance, the ideal means of transportation for the place and the entire peninsula and enables almost everyone to enjoy sustainability on vacation. There are bike paths around the village that can also be used with trailers for children or dogs. Many students from Westkapelle ride their bikes to the schools in the 15 km away Middelburg. For some years now, the main cycle paths have been built with a median. You should be careful when a group of young Germans comes towards you on a single-lane cycle path. With small children who should first learn to ride a bike, you shouldn't choose Sundays to practice, as there is a lot of "pedelec traffic" from Dutch "landlocked countries". At Opencyclemap all bicycle junctions for Belgium and the Netherlands are already entered. There are no bike paths in the village center.

  • While in the places on the peninsula that are directly on the sea you quickly get the impression that all economic life revolves around tourism and that there is hardly any typical Zeeland life to be seen, this is already different a few kilometers from the coast . For example, if you are cycling on the paved or paved idyllic country roads to a farm in 1 Grijpskerke you can still feel the former atmosphere that used to prevail in this agricultural area.
