Zoutelande (Pronounced "saute-lande") is a seaside resort Walcheren in the Dutch province Zeeland. The village is located at the confluence of the Westerschelde in the North Sea and belongs to the church Veere.

background

The place Zoutelande, which lies directly behind high dunes or now behind a dike, quickly became adjacent after the Second World War Domburg and West chapel a popular holiday destination, especially among Germans North Rhine-Westphalia. The "Zeewsen Riviera" advertising slogan was also invented, as this part of the Netherlands had the most hours of sunshine on average. Due to the changed sea conditions (see Wikipedia article about the delta plan) a part of the dunes has already been replaced by a dike on which there is a wide promenade with a view of the sea. Most of the space is on the beach at low tide.

According to tradition, the Anglo-Saxon missionary Wilibrord joined in 690 West chapel landed and destroyed a sanctuary there. A Willibrord cult emerged, which was relocated to Zoutelande a few hundred years later, including the fountain. This old Willibrordus well, however, had to give way to the construction of the dyke. In 1981 a replica returned to the foot of the dike.

activities

In the meantime the dike promenade has changed a bit
  • Ring riding. Where knights used to fight each other with long lances and tried to throw each other out of the saddle, this has now been replaced by a less harsh variant: ring piercing,
A slightly older couple in traditional costume ringing
which is still eagerly practiced by the locals all over Walcheren. Fun for young and old in the streets of Zoutelande. On mostly Belgian draft horses, the riders have to hit a small ring in full gallop with their lance in one hand, which gets closer and closer in the course of the competition. A very nice variant of this ring stitch is played with old horse-drawn carriages. Originally a festival for the population, this hustle and bustle is now a magnet for visitors.
