Zierikzee is a city of Zealand, province of south gods Netherlands.

To know

Zierikzee is a historic city on the Gulf of the Eastern Scheldt with a well-preserved old town and numerous monuments. Tourists of Dutch and German nationality flock to the town in the period of August. Many are day hikers from nearby seaside resorts.

Background

Zierikzee is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1156 with the name of Siricasha. Around 1217 it was granted the title of city by the Count of Holland William II. In 1304 it was the scene of a battle in which a Franco-Dutch fleet successfully repulsed Guy's troops Namur that had invaded the Zealand.

During the 80 years war the city was taken by the Geuzen a confederation of Dutch Calvinist nobles who rebelled against the Spanish rulers. The Spanish command was forced to leave the city following a mutiny of its soldiers who had not been paid. In the 17th century Zierikzee established itself as a fishing port and played no role in the colonization of the East Indies. In the following century, trade supplanted fishing and became the main source of income. A first hindrance to the flourishing of maritime trade was caused by the Anglo-Dutch wars. The city declined and its inhabitants dropped from 10,000 to 6,000.
