Namur (in German Namur pronounced, in Flemish Names) is the capital of the Belgian of the same name province and at the same time also the capital of Wallonia.

background

history

Settled since Celtic times, the Merovingians called the city, which was first mentioned in the 7th century Sedroch, from 962 it was called Namucho and then from the 12th century Namuco. This name was derived from the Gallic deity Nam. A county since the 10th century, Namur developed on the north bank of the Meuse and came under the rule of the Counts of Flanders in the 13th century. Philip the Good of Burgundy acquired the city in the 15th century. The already existing fortress, the citadel, was greatly expanded and strengthened by the Spanish Netherlands in the 17th century in order to be able to withstand the attacks of Louis XIV; nevertheless, Namur was conquered by France in 1692. The French rule was short-lived, however, after only three years the fortifications, which were among the best in Europe, fell into the hands of the Dutch. During the French Revolution, Namur became French again and after a brief Dutch interlude, the city became part of the Kingdom of Belgium following the Belgian Revolution. The Germans, who repeatedly led their armies through Wallonia, finished the work of the others and laid most of it in ruins, so that only remnants can be visited.

geography

The location between the Meuse and Sambre is decisive for the Namur landscape. The city is located northwest of the Meuse and is roughly divided into two by the Sambre. The image is dominated by the huge fortifications of the citadel, which extends westward from the confluence of the two rivers.
