background

The first residents lived in the settlement 1500 years ago Brabers (at Burgh-Haamstede along the coast. Around 800, Schouwen was one of the first areas of Zeeland to be repopulated, such as the ring wall of Burgh shows. Around 1350 "Schouwen-Duiveland" consisted of four islands: Schouwen, Duiveland, Dreischor and Bommenede. The islands were separated from each other by water and grass. The largest river was the Gouwe, a busy waterway that connected the Oosterschelde and the Grevelingen. On the west side of the island was Zierikzee. In the following centuries, polders and dyke breakthroughs alternated. New land was created by piling up the Groden between Schouwen and Dreischor. However, a lot of land was lost on the south coast of Schouwen. In 1619 a dam was built in the Gouwe that connected Schouwen with Duiveland. Zierikzee and Brouwershaven developed into flourishing trading cities. The shifting of the trade routes to the north left the cities deserted in the 18th century. But Brouwershaven experienced a brief revival after 1839 when it served Rotterdam as an outer port. The island was badly hit by the storm surge in 1953. The Delta Plan led to major changes from 1965 onwards. The island was freed from its longtime isolation through four connections: Brouwersdam, Grevelendingam, Zeeland bridge and Oosterschelde weir.

Zierikzee is the administrative center of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. With 568 listed buildings, it is one of the richest cities in the Netherlands in this regard. The "titular town" Brouwershaven has traded its past as a trading town for water sports. At Ouwerkerk the caissons are still reminiscent of the flood disaster of 1953. The small one Three choir is the most impressive of the Zeeland ring villages. On the south coast of Schouwen, a brackish marshland is being created, in which the plants and waterfowl that prefer salt ater feel at home. For water sports enthusiasts, the Grevelingen and the Oosterschelde are a real Eldorado. Hikers will find pleasant areas in the Westerschouwen state forest, the nature reserves, Schelphoek and Duinwater as well as the Kreken-Area of Ouwerkerk.
