Bruinisse is a village in the east of Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province Zeeland. The fishing village is east of the Grevelendingam on the waters of Krammer and Zijpe.

background

In 1467 Philip of Burgundy gave his consent to the dikes of the Groden and Schlicke in the east of the island of Duiveland. The village of Bruinisse was established in the east of the new polder. A road (today Oudestraat) connected the Kirchennring with the harbor. The young village was badly hit by the St. Felix flood of 1530 and the invasion of the Spanish in 1575.

Together with Tholen, Bruinisse formed the center of the shellfish fishery. The mussel and oyster catches flourished thanks to exports to England until 1850. In 1911 a large part of the fishing fleet was destroyed by a violent storm, after which the fishery quickly went downhill. Bruinisse's monopoly was taken over by Yerseke. But mussel fishing is still very important.

In 1945 the town center was completely destroyed in a heavy bombing. After the closure of Grevelingen (1964), a marina and a recreation center were built on the east side of the village. Today Bruinisse is a popular water sports center.
