Regions

The entire area is now one municipality, but until January 1, 2013 Goeree-Overflakkee consisted of four municipalities:

  • Goederede municipality with Ouddorp, Goederede and Stellendam
  • Dirksland municipality with Melissant, Dirksland and Herkingen
  • Middelharnis municipality with Sommelsdijk, Middelharnis, Stad aan‘t Haringvliet and Nieuwe Tonge
  • Oostflakkee municipality with Den Bommel, Achthuizen, Oude Tonge and Ooltgensplaat

Other goals

At Browersdam there is the large marina and bungalow park Port Zélande in the middle, and a sandy beach on the lake side. On a few days, museum trains run from the southern tip of Goeree-Overflakkee, De Punt, over the Browersdam to Scharendijke Schouwen-Duivelandthey also stop at Port Zélande and Middelplaat Haven.

By train

The nearest train station is Rotterdam. There you can change to the bus or cover the approx. 50 km by bike. If you don't want to cycle that far, you can still take the subway to Spijkenisse, a suburb of Rotterdam.

By car

Goeree-Overflakkee is connected to the mainland and the surrounding islands via four dykes or locks:

  • The Hellegatsdam with the N59 leads to the Hellegatsplein motorway exit on the A29.
  • The Kramersluis with the N257 and the N59 connects Oude Tonge with Bruinisse Schouwen-Duiveland and St. Philipsland.
  • The Browersdam with the N57 establishes the connection to Scharendijke Schouwen-Duiveland represent.
  • The Haringvliet locks and the N57 lead to Helevoetsluis and further on Rotterdam.

Instead of a train, there are bus connections and the cycle path network is well developed. On a few days, a museum train runs from De Punt near Ouddorp via Port Zélande and Middelplaat Haven to Scharendijke Schouwen-Duiveland, but this has more of a tourist value and is not really useful as a means of transport.

Tourist Attractions

  • You can find windmills in almost every place. Except for the mill, which is still used commercially De Hoop in Ouddorp they all belong to the Molenstichting (= Windmühlenstiftung) and can be viewed on Saturdays.
  • Ouddorp:
    • At the top of the island stands a 1 lighthouse.
  • Goederede:

The 8 Brouwersdam / Port Zélande beach is a very popular surf spot for kite and windsurfers. Because it is a dike surrounded by water on both sides, it is very windy. Beginners train on the Grevelingenmeer, advanced and professionals are on the other side of the North Sea.

sailing

The Grevelingenmeer is a popular lake for sailing. You can start on 1 Herkingen harbor, at the 2 Ouddorp harbor and on 3 Port Zélande at Brouwersdam.

There are many islands in the Grevelingen Sea. Some are under nature protection, at others there are even harbors for the sailors, for example on 4 Ossehoek.

To go biking

There is a well-developed bike infrastructure on Goeree-Overflakkee. This invites you to use the bike for excursions across the island. In addition, the island is largely surrounded by dykes that can be used by bike.

  • The dikes that connect Goeree-Overflakkee to the mainland and other islands are nice to drive because you can see bodies of water on both sides.
  • 1 De kwarde Hoek, a protected dune area north of Goederede, is partly allowed to be driven on by bike, partly only walking is allowed.
