Burgh-Haamstede is a double village on the edge of a beautiful dune area and with a wide sandy beach on the North Sea on Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province Zeeland.

background

Even before the Second World War, the two villages of Burgh and Haamstede grew together.

Burgh was attached to a ring wall castle from the 9th century. The castle grounds have been preserved. On the east side, part of the wall was reconstructed with a palisade and a path with a passage through the ring.

Also Haamstede owns a ring with a church. A heavy keep with a gate building was built around 1250. The castle was expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries.
