Domburg is a traditional seaside resort on the North Sea Walcheren in the Dutch province Zeeland. It belongs to the church Veere.

background

Domburg is one of the oldest cities in Walcheren. Today's Domburg was built not far from where the settlement was located Walacrium and the Carolingian castle disappeared under the sand. As early as the 17th and 18th centuries, Domburg was visited by Middelburgers who enjoyed themselves in the dunes and in the hostels. After that, the elite began building summer quarters. At the beginning of the 19th century Domburg developed into a well-known seaside resort. In 1834 the first bathing carriage was pulled across the beach to the water and four years later the first bathing pavilion was built. However, the bathers came from a rather limited circle: only the Walcheren elite populated the coast. It was only with the development of Zeeland by rail and international ferry connections that bathers came more and more often from home and abroad. Domburg made a real boom when some German families built their summer houses in the dunes. They were followed by a stream of noble and royal guests, including Queen Elizabeth of Romania.

Reports about the healing effects of the sea and the clean air appeared more and more often and the arrival of the doctor Johann George Metzger (1838-1909), who as a Kneipp doctor treated many patients from home and abroad with massages, made Domburg an international sea and lake Well-known spa. His patients, but also other bathers, stayed in the bath hotel or in their own villas.

Domburg's fame also attracted various artists around 1900. They came not only because of the clean air and the healing lake water, but also praised the Domburg light. In the first years of the last century, artists such as Mondriaan and Jan Toorop settled here and were inspired for their works. Some of Mondria's most famous works were created in the dunes near Domburg. He left Domburg in 1916, Toorop in 1920. After that, the artists' colony was quickly over. Interest in the seaside resort also fell sharply on the part of the European elite. During the Second World War, the Germans built bunkers for their Atlantic Wall and blew up various characteristic buildings for them. In 1992 the neglected Badhotel burned down completely. In 1994 the new Badhotel was reopened. Domburg still attracts many tourists today, who not only enjoy the beach and the lake, but also the atmospheric streets with their terraces.
