background
At the beginning of our era, the southwest of the Netherlands still consisted of a closed coast. During floods in the early Middle Ages, this appearance changed significantly. Large parts of the old dunes and the peatland behind them were washed over and knocked away. The watercourses that cut through the peat crumbled the area into numerous islands. Back then it was much more than it is now. The island of Klakkee, for example, consisted of (inter alia) Dircskant, Sommersdijc and Middel-Harnisse. In turn, Flakkee later merged with other islands to form Goeree-Overflakkee.
The dunes that border the Dutch North Sea coast north of Scheveningen offer a completely different picture. Their natural wealth is enormous, thanks to the many mini-milieus together. There are high dune peaks opposite moist dune valleys, places with a lot of wind and places in the slipstream, salty air at the sea and salty air further inland, places in the sunshine and those in the shade. And also all possible mixed forms. The dunes make up only one percent of the Dutch territory, but here 850 of the 1,400 plants living in the Netherlands come before 140 of the 190 bird species that breed in the Netherlands. The same applies to other animal species: the dunes are one of the richest ecosystems in the country.
