Fryslân - Fryslân

Fryslân Province

The province Fryslân (Dutch and German: Friesland) lies in the Netherlands. In the north it borders on the Wadden Sea, in the east on the Groningen Province, in the southeast to the province Overijssel, in the southwest to the province Flevoland, in the west to the IJsselmeer and (connected via the closure dike) to the province North Holland.

Friesland, as the name is called in Dutch and in German, is a rather rural province. The largest city, the provincial capital Leeuwarden, (Frisian: Ljouwert), has just under 100,000 inhabitants, the entire province only about 646,000. But there are some very pretty little towns that can each be explored in a few hours. The. Runs through all eleven historic Frisian cities Elfstedentocht, a legendary ice skating race in particularly severe winters. The north coast is less touristy, but the west coast is more interesting, plus there are some lakes in Friesland.

For the cross-border historical region of the same name, see Friesland.

Landscapes

Town Hall of Franeker

There is no official subdivision into regions, at most into municipalities, but there are definitely different types of landscape. A useful subdivision is, for example:

  • Fryslâns forests. The quiet and rather unknown southeast of the province impresses with its extensive forests.

background

From around 400 to 200 before the new era, a proto-Frisian culture slowly began to emerge between the inlets of the Vlie and Ems Terpene called, heaped up mounds of earth to develop. The inhabitants were considered by the Romans Frisii designated. From the year 12 BC The Romans are in Friesland when their general Drusus started his campaign in Germania begins. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, Friesland stretched in from the Zwin Zeeuws-Vlaanderen to Weser out. In the 7th century the country was independent. The beginning of the 8th century became known through the Frisian King Redbad and the Irish missionary Bonifatius. After the incorporation into the Franconian Empire, Friesland existed Lex Frisionum (= Law of the Frisians) according to three parts: the area between the Zwin and the Vlie, the area between the Vlie and the Lauwers and the area between the Lauwers and the Weser. From the year 1000, part of it was under the jurisdiction of the county of Holland. The remaining parts were quite independent at that time, as not a single count or duke could control the area. In 1287 and 1288, Count Floris V conquered Holland West Friesland. The Lucia flood also took place in 1287, killing 50,000 to 80,000 people (with 500,000 inhabitants throughout the Netherlands) and contributing to the formation of the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. The latter finally separated West Friesland from the rest of Friesland.

During the transition from the High Middle Ages to the late Middle Ages, many monasteries were founded in Friesland. The 14th and 15th centuries were marked by regular armed conflicts among the Frisians. In the 14th century the city of Groningen got more and more power in the Friesland between Lauwers and Ems (today's province of Groningen). Ulrich Cirksena became Count of East Friesland in the 15th century. In 1498, Emperor Maximilian of Austria appointed Duke Albrecht of Saxony as lord of all of Friesland. However, this only managed to get the Friesland west of the Lauwers under his control. At this point in time, historical Friesland was divided.

The modern era began for Friesland with the last Frisian-Dutch War (1515-1524). With the formation of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands in 1581, Friesland regained autonomous status. The Admiralty of Friesland, established in 1596, was one of five admirals of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. In 1795 Friesland lost its independence again when it became a province of the Batavian Republic.

For Friesland, the 19th century was a period of relative decline. This development began in the days of the republic, but it has now become clear. Friesland increased its population, but much more slowly than other provinces. More and more Frisians sought their salvation more or less involuntarily, especially in Holland. At the time of the republic, Friesland was the most populous region after Holland, now it has been overtaken by Gelderland, Brabant, Limburg and Overijssel.

At the same time, the 19th century was also a time of expansion in Friesland. The dairy industry in particular gave the province a new reputation. A dairy was built in every village worth mentioning. Frisian agriculture specialized in cattle breeding, the Frisian cow became a symbol for the province of Friesland.

language

The most widely spoken languages in the province of Fryslân are Dutch and Frisian (Frysk). Frisian has the status of an official national language in the Netherlands and is used to a limited extent as a court language and as a language of instruction. Some administrations and media, especially radio and television, use Frisian more intensively. In Friesland in 2004 around 440,000 people spoke Frisian, of which around 350,000 were their mother tongue. There are no up-to-date figures on how many people speak Frisian around the world. In a publication from 1976, the number of Frisian speakers was estimated at around 700,000. In 2009 there should be 467,000 speakers.

In terms of linguistic history, Frisian is closer to English than Dutch - Old Frisian is a close relative of Old English. Modern Frisian, however, is heavily influenced by Dutch loanwords.

The Frisians speak Frisian primarily among themselves, so for tourists the province is no different from other provinces.

By bicycle

Various LF bicycle routes lead through Fryslân:

  • LF3 - Rietland route (Holwerd - Leeeuwarden - Heerenveen - Kampen): The "Röhricht" route is the northern part of the LF3. As the name suggests, this route leads through the water-rich Fryslân and the beautiful natural area De Weerribben. An area where reed cultivation was an important source of income around 1920. The reeds were mainly used to cover roofs, but also to make baskets and brooms. The route runs along the Dokkumer Ee between Holwerd and Leeuwarden. It goes through typical Frisian farming villages, where owl holes adorn the gables, bell chairs lonely waiting to be rung, and past elegant country estates.
  • LF10 - Waddenze route (Callantsoog - Den Oever - Harlingen - Holwerd - Lauwersoog - Delfzijl - Nieuweschans): This route runs along the Frisian and Groningen coasts. The highlights are the former West Frisian island of Wieringen, the dike and the Lauwersmeer National Park. Together with the LF1 (Noordzeeroute), the LF19 forms the Dutch part of the [http: && www.northsea-cycle.com North Sea Cycle Route].
  • LF22 - Zuiderzeeroute West (Zurich - Stacoren - Lemmer - Kampen): The LF22 runs along the Frisian part of the former Zuiderzee coast. Old cities such as Hindeloopen and Workum are approached and from Stavoren you can also set sail to Enkhuizen.

Fryslân is also covered by a dense network of cycle paths that are part of the Button-down network are. So everyone can put together their own personal tour, you just need to write down the numbers and then follow your personal route along the way. over this link it goes to the network in Fryslân.

By boat

Fryslân has a dense network of navigable canals and lakes that make it easy to take a longer tour of the province - even with a standing mast. There are also plenty of moorings, but Fryslân is also quite crowded during the season. On the Waterkaart and the Water almanac of the ANWB (or corresponding German-language works) you should definitely not do without when planning and carrying out a tour. There is a page with nice tour suggestions (in Dutch) here.

In the street

Of course, you can also drive a car on mostly well-developed roads throughout Fryslân. In small villages, however, they can be a bit narrow and the bridges a bit steep. It is best to park outside the city center and walk the short way to the center.

Eleven cities tours

This bridge at Giekerk was converted into a memorial for the Elfstedentocht; Up close you can see the many small tiles with pictures of the participants

The tour was ridden for the first time in 1909 and only ridden once per winter. To get the green light to organize the tour, the ice in all districts must be at least 15 cm thick. That doesn't happen very often and the De Tocht has only been driven 15 times in its history. The last time it happened in 1997. But as soon as it freezes for a few days in Friesland, speculations start about a possible tour. When it really takes place, it's a big event. The winner will receive eternal fame and each participant who has completed the route will receive a metal cross.

The bike tour is expressly not a race, but is aimed at everyone. It is important that the home straight is reached by midnight at the latest.
    • Eleven cities walking tour Those who like mass hikes can also do the 203.5 km for five days Elfstedenwandeltocht participate. On the first four days you have to cover 45 km in 12 hours, on the last day 21 km (7 hours).

If the wind is unfavorable, the ship is towed. At the Strontrace Only historic ships are allowed to participate, mostly Skûtsjes and Tjalken. The route leads over the IJsselmeer to Amsterdam. Then it goes either via Amsterdam or via Haarlem to the turning point in Warmond, where after a short break you return via the other route. The race is considered by many to be the toughest race with historic ships, as there is non-stop sailing day and night. Towing in unfavorable winds requires a lot of stamina and skill. When they leave Workum, the spectators are asked to support the ships in towing.
The Strontrace from some other events.
    • It starts on the Saturday before the race with the children's event Klompzilen. With wooden shoes converted into sailing boats (Klompen) children run their own races on a city canal in Workum. Meet at 12 noon at Doopsgezinde kerk on Noard. From 1 p.m. the Klompen put in the dolte.
    • Visserijdagen. (Fishing days). From Monday to Friday, up to 29 historic fishing boats are allowed to fish in the traditional way on the IJsselmeer. They leave the port of Workum just before the Strontracers, sailing or towing. The use of the engine earns you penalty points. On Wednesday and Saturday the catch is brought ashore and sold in "Dutch auction".
    • Beurtveer. In memory of the earlier scheduled service to Amsterdam, this is a race between passengers and mail. The "Börtschiffe" call at a number of ports of their own choice. It happens as before: without an engine and only with your own sailing skills. You can register as a passenger with Letty Swart via [email protected] or Tel: 075-6212667. A single trip Workum-Amsterdam with full board on board costs € 80, the return trip € 150 Beurtvaarders after the fishing boats leave the port of Workum at around 1.45 p.m.

security

On the islands it is much cooler during the day in spring than inland. Because the sea water is still very cold during this period, there are few clouds. That is why the islands belong to the sunniest part of the Netherlands.
