Dokkum is a city in Fryslân and seat of the municipality of Dongeradeel. It is one of the eleven Frisian cities with a historic city center.
background
Dokkum received city rights in 1298, but had already become known in connection with the murder of St. Boniface on June 5, 754 or 755. The city later grew into an important trading center and became the seat of the Admiralty. After this moved to Harlingen in 1645, calm returned to the city and agriculture became the most important source of income. In addition, the coast was pushed further and further north and the city could only be reached by a canal from the sea.
