Enkhuizen is known as the "herring town" and not only because it has three herrings in its coat of arms. Rather, the city owes its wealth to the herring catch and trade. There was already a settlement here in the Bronze Age. During excavations in 2009, a farm and a burial mound from around 1575-1200 BC. found.

But Enkhuizen began its real existence in the Middle Ages as a port and fishing village. In 1356 Count Willem V granted city rights. In 1422 today's Zuider- or Sint Pancraskerk was built, a little later the Westerkerk. In the 14th century the first port was dug, of which today's Zuiderhavendijk still exists. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the ports were expanded and city fortifications were built. After a city expansion at the end of the 16th century. this fortification should get the shape that is still recognizable today. The Reformation and the beginning of the uprising against Spain marked the beginning of Enkhuiz's heyday. In 1572 the city was one of the first cities in Holland to side with Prince Willem van Oranje. As a reward, the city received the right to buoy on the Zuiderzee in 1573 and was allowed to levy a tax on all ships on the Zuiderzee. The 17th century was Enkhuizen's heyday. The city had the largest herring fleet in the Netherlands, and at the same time had a chamber of the United East India Company (VOC). The West Indian Company was also represented in the city. The trade with the Baltic Sea countries, England, West Africa and (Ndl .-) India made Enkhuizen rich. At that time the city had around 25,000 inhabitants, a lot more than today. In 1671 the road between Enkhuizen and Hoorn was completed as the first country road in Holland.

End of the 16th century the upswing was over. The wars against England, the silting up of the harbor entrance and rival Amsterdam made Enkhuizen one of the sleepy towns on the Zuiderzee. With the construction of the dike, the herring catch finally disappeared, even if other species were caught in the newly created IJsselmeer for a long time. The economic decline caused the population to dwindle: from 1650 to 1850, the population fell from 22,000 to 5,400. Therefore, between 1750 and 1850, around 1,600 houses in the city disappeared, so that it shrank significantly. Whole districts were turned into gardens or pasture land. Only the construction of the railway line to Amsterdam led to a small upswing. After the Second World War, the population increased again and for the first time new residential areas were built outside the fortifications from the 18th century. Today the city lives mainly from tourism and water sports as well as the flower industry.
